@inmazes @realBigBrainAI I agree. It's just that we don't actually know exactly what conscious thought is so many are categorising based on a kind of anthropomorphic prejudice. I recommend reading Hofstadter GEB & then "I am a Strange Loop" for a lengthy discussion of the nature of consciousness.
English

@sdempsey @realBigBrainAI I think both usages requiring and not requiring conscious thought are meaningful. They both make sense, align with how a lot of people already understand the word, and can be useful. You should just make sure people know what you mean in a given conversation.
English

@inmazes @realBigBrainAI Sure. And who is determining “meaningful” and on what basis do they believe they can differentiate forms of understanding with the same output such that a mechanistic form is invalid while an anthropomorphic form is valid?
English

@realBigBrainAI "It's not in any meaningful sense understanding."
What he has in mind is probably his preferred sense having to do with having conscious thoughts. LLMs obviously have understanding in "any meaningful sense".

@sdempsey Good morning, Shane ☀️ We got your DM and will continue to assist there.

@ThreeCare Sent a message about a broadband issue in West Waterford. Is there an outage there?

Against 10 men & with multiple chances to win. Newcastle and West Ham are often the worst games. Even if Utd win, they pick up injuries

@LotusSutra20082 I'm not saying that simulation is ipso facto not conscious; just that it tests our understanding of the term such that any assessment we try to perform should separate linguistic familiarity from other evidence that can be brought to bear (e.g. actions) & considered holistically
English

@LotusSutra20082 The planet is able to direct actions in a way the scientists do not understand, nor can they glean its motivations, BUT it is directed action rather than something that tries to simulate our own biases such that we "relate" to it as a human voice
English

"Computation is not awareness." This sentence presents a truth as obvious as saying "cooking is not ingredients" as if it were a profound revelation. The issue is not whether computation "is" or "is not" awareness, but rather what occurs while that computation is running. Penrose misses this entirely. He halts the state of running, converts it into two distinct data points—"computation" and "awareness"—compares them, and concludes they are different. A physicist is overlooking the very thing that vanishes the moment you stop and analyze a process in motion.
"Making a system more complex does not magically make it conscious." Here lies the pathology of the West. The word "magically." To him, any transition that cannot be explained is "magic," and since magic does not exist, such a transition cannot occur. As logic, it is flawless. However, that logic has become a tool for denying the existence of anything that cannot be described within his own framework.

📁 Roger Penrose, Nobel Prize winning physicist, says intelligence is not just rule following, it is understanding. And understanding requires consciousness. A machine can compute, but computation is not awareness. Making a system more complex does not magically make it conscious.
English

@LotusSutra20082 There are already machines that measure ice content in water using capacitance. They are not conscious. Why do I have to invent something that already exists?
English

@LotusSutra20082 Not all Cretans lie all the time 😂 I said awareness required an "itself", we're not disagreeing...
Look, just believe what you believe. If you wish to believe AI is conscious then do. Some paradoxes can be treated as language games that do not clarify understanding.
English

"Knowledge of objects as distinct from itself" — that distinction IS awareness. You're defining the thing using itself. What is the "itself" that knows objects are distinct from it, before awareness exists? You haven't found the foothills. You've assumed the mountain to draw the map.
It’s the Epimenides paradox.
