Fantastic #scientificwork introduced below in the form of a great video, explaining that scientists were able to more or less reproduce the #camouflage #mechanism of #octopuses, during which pigment filled cells allow the fast change of coloration fitting to their actual surroundings. According to the new scientific findings, researchers created thin #polymerfilms that they can program to produce different textures and colors when bringing these films in contact with a fluid. The researchers name this mechanism a #tunable #photonicskin that might be used for example in wearable #devices or #robotics. © this text #StefanFWirth Berlin 2026 Reference: Doshi, S., Güsken, N.A., Dijk, G. et al. Soft photonic skins with dynamic texture and colour control. Nature 649, 345–352 (2026). doi.org/10.1038/s41586…

Midway through grad school, I was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium dazzled, watching cuttlefish change the colours and textures on their skin. This morning, our paper, "Soft photonic skins with dynamic texture and colour control" (rdcu.be/eX1Sw) was published in Nature.

Our photonic skins can be programmed to change texture (e.g. wavy vs flat, or matte vs glossy) and color patterns. We used electron beams to "write" different patterns into the films by changing how they swell in water. The video shows how a color pattern changes in real time.
