The NC legislature is working on the budget right now. Some want to permanently cut thousands of vacant state positions and call it savings. #ncga #ncpol SEANC's position: don't cut the jobs. Fix the pay. 🧵

@kellymccullen @PatMcCroryNC @MyPBSNC Correctional officers (never prison guards) have great representation. We secured more serious felony for assaulting them, fought hard for their pay plan & lobbied to double their death benefit. We still have more to do for everyone within the walls but @seanc gets results #ncpol

Pay raises are part of the NC budget discussion this Spring/Summer. Well-organized employee groups can communicate & apply political pressure, but former NC Gov. @PatMcCroryNC highlights one group of state workers, he believes, need attention. #ncpol #Statelines @MyPBSNC

Our arguments against cutting jobs are breaking through. The media are taking note. Legislators must recognize it as a pay crisis, not a problem of government bloat. #ncga #ncpol ncnewsline.com/2026/05/15/sta…

Employees at Craggy Correctional have been informed that the prison will close later this summer. NC’s population has increased by 20% in the last two decades and it is projected to be one of the fastest growing states in the country for years to come. And yet, we have closed 22% of our prisons in that time. #ncga #ncpol wlos.com/news/local/cra…

3% while inflation is chewing through paychecks is ok for “regular” state employees, but we are trying to do even more for teachers? A polite way of telling employees who keep the state operating (including k-12 non teaching employees) they aren’t valued. @SEANC
Kelly McCullen@kellymccullen

NC's budget framework carries pay raises across NC Govt. 3% for "regular" state workers, 8% average raise for teachers and double-digit raises for law enforcement. On State Lines, Rep. @ErinforNC explains negotiations, w/ @MyNCSenate, & further helping teachers. #ncpol

NC’s population has grown 20% over the last 20 years but we have closed 22% of the prisons. Word is that another one of those prisons is about to be closed and possibly sold to a developer? Are we worried about public safety or private profit? #ncpol @SEANC

NC has added less than 1% to its state workforce since 2009. It has added 2 million residents. Virginia and Georgia further expanded their workforces. Both outperform NC economically. You can't shrink your way to a stronger state. #ncga #ncpol

Cutting ALL long-vacant positions saves $138 million. NC's budget: $30.8 billion. Less than half of one percent — and it would gut corrections, health care, and public safety staffing. That's not fiscal responsibility. That's a workforce reduction. #ncga #ncpol

Correctional officers: 3rd lowest starting salary in the country. State RNs: $22,000 below the national average. 55% vacancy rate. Highway Patrol: 49th out of 50 states in starting pay. These aren't numbers. These are your coworkers' empty chairs. #ncga #ncpol

34% of vacant NC state positions are empty because the pay isn't competitive. Not because the work isn't needed. Not because the jobs don't matter. Because we don't pay enough to fill them. #ncga #ncpol jobsdata.seanc.org

Just because a job is vacant doesn’t mean it’s not necessary, said @ArdisWatkins. She said if job cuts are on the table, agency leaders need to have a role in the discussions. “I'm extremely concerned, and I hope that there will be thorough public meetings with agency heads reporting to explain what their agency does, so that we know if these cuts hurt the public or not,” Watkins said. wral.com/news/nccapitol…

I asked @ncspeakerhall about this yesterday. His answer: "There's no agreement on that yet" but "if we can take those (vacant position) dollars and use them, I would like to use them for salary increases for the other folks there." #ncpol #ncga

Lawmakers announced a budget deal yesterday. They told us about the raises. Here’s what they didn’t tell us: how many state jobs are being eliminated to pay for it. A thread. 🧵 #ncga #NCPol
