NYC has a hidden listening room and café. It's called Silence Please and it's one of the most unique spots in the city: - hundreds of vinyl records - high-end speaker showroom - delicious coffee, teas and patries - private listening stations w/ headsets - 2,000 sq ft of gallery-style space - long communal tables + couches It's part café, part teahouse, part event space. They do tea ceremonies, vinyl painting sessions, and live DJ sets.

@sensitivepapi @gabrielwinant my guess is, in the future, facility with AI will probably be as superfluous as "proficiency in microsoft word" on a resume, but i have heard this exact line--that students *need* "experience with AI" on a resume to be competitive, right now--from people more in the know than me

@gabrielwinant wish I could agree! it’s just too difficult for me to imagine wealthy parents shelling out money to send their kid to a place that would (by design) make them an uncompetitive job candidate in any field that pays big money

That no regional liberal arts college struggling with enrollments has decided to rebrand as the place to go if you hate AI staggers the mind. Huge first mover advantage to whoever does it. That no one has testifies to the impoverished imagination of the academic admin class.

The first major university that publicly commits to a total AI ban in its undergrad teaching (no AI in class, in creating syllabi or class prep, creating & completing assignments, or grading) and makes that part of its brand will see a major surge in applications & enrollment.

@rhunterh Yes, great pull. Their typographer should win an award. It’s been interesting to watch restaurateurs titrate the correct amount of homage - earlier attempts (cf Turk’s Inn, Little Beaver) feel slightly on the nose. One needs more than Schlitz-branded glass lamps, taxidermy.

Thankfully we’re past the millennial pastiche phase of ‘white hipsterdom’. (Mason jars, roll-up garage doors, etc.)
In its place we have craftsmen working on meticulous replicas of dying vernacular bars.
The Peek Inn, in Greenpoint, is a fine example of the form.
