It’s not uncommon for governments to try to heavy the media into reporting the stories they want in the way they want. Governments of all colours have done it. But it’s never ok. I’ve been hearing stories that the government is currently going hard on media outlets to report on this budget the way they want it reported. Obviously anyone paying attention will also have seen the public scuffle between the One Nation leader and her advisors over how to treat the media. The mainstream media is supposed to be a source of truth, balance, and fearless independence. That’s compromised if journalists fear being cut off from asking questions or getting inside information based on their reporting or the editorial decisions of their outlets. As a contributing media outsider, I both care deeply about what I’m hearing, and can’t be bullied in the same way.
