@jamesrbuk The questioning on Today got right on my tits “Do you think people are right to be annoyed about this?” she asked repeatedly and annoyingly. (I have a small business AND I am a landlord, and I’m neither confused nor annoyed at the principle of taxing capital over labour)

@DPJHodges And Tory and Labour staffers have been volunteering on US election campaigns for decades. Plenty of Labour activists cut their teeth on the Obama campaign (less so Tories for Trump, but they certainly exist).

@DavidJ88686487 @bencoates1 Also barring dual citizenship gives those of us who don’t *need* to become Dutch no reason to go through the process. I’d become Dutch in addition to others, but I’m not putting that inburgering work in just for the chance to give up my home passport.

@bencoates1 My two cents as an expat that is becoming Dutch this year. Focus on making the inburgering harder. It’s way to easy and I’m a not motivated to go beyond the basic A2 level. This is the type of thing you need to force people into… no one is learning out of joy….

I think if you live in a country for, say, more than a year then it’s weird if you don’t make an effort to learn the language. But saying “you can only come here if you speak Dutch” won’t make more people learn Dutch. It’ll just mean people don’t come.
Vodskaya@Vodskaya

@bencoates1 I don't mind foreign students, but I do believe that we should promote learning Dutch more. Learning Dutch helps you feel at home in day to day life. It can be seriously helpful for foreign students in the short run, and makes talent more likely to stay in the long run.

@BestForBritain Working four days a week is quite normal here in the Netherlands. Despite that - or perhaps because of it - productivity per hr is 20-30% higher (per OECD data) and higher GDP per capita. Unemployment rates: 🇬🇧 4.2% 🇳🇱 3.9%

@ShowerAbsolute Bought after four hours of flight delay and an entire bottle of champagne en route to Beijing. Faithful friends for years until they fell in the sea while I was paddleboarding in the Whitsundays four years later.

@ShowerAbsolute I have bought designer sunglasses because my flight was delayed and it seemed like a good idea after many champagnes in the lounge. Fortunately it actually was a good idea and I still liked them the next day. Probably my fave sunglasses ever.

@rhymerrigby We got AC in the bedroom of our house in London as it’s in the loft and unbearably hot for weeks in the summer. And as the place was under the Heathrow flight path we couldn’t open windows at night because it was LOUD.

Hot take: It's very warm, but I still don't believe you need domestic AC in London

@JonnElledge I went on a work trip to Lisbon recently. Booked myself four days down the coast - half hour train away - in Cascais. I drank wine, ate seafood, and read books. It was great.

jonn elledge is mainly on bluesky
okay if a person was going to Lisbon by a week and mainly intended to sit by a pool reading books but not entirely, what else might this theoretical person want to do

@sharonodea @kirby_pj He was banging on about insect protien and I pointed out it had been in use for years, legally, and a few other things on stuff he didn't understand, and he eventually blocked me as well...

. @SBarrettBar - your widely read and cited tweet (including by Tommy Robinson) was used by others to spread disinformation which was a root cause of the appalling riots - whatever your intention it was unwise - that you have today chosen to retweet it is incomprehensible.

@nathansldennis @kirby_pj Yeah he posted about something allegedly happening in Amsterdam, and I said that it wasn’t and I know that because the place was literally outside my house. I shared a photo AND a link to the website from the builders to explain it. And his response was to block me.

@MolloyLaurence @jonas Yeah I mean in NL bills come with a QR as standard. Also to pay stuff online. You scan the QR with your phone and auth the payment in your banking app.

@sharonodea @jonas I wonder if the OP is referring to bills without QR (OCR of bill) though. QR requires the source generating the bill to QR it as well, and I would imagine that not all can/do/will for some time to come.

Banking feature I’d pay money for: take a photo of a bill and then a payment form is correctly pre-populated with amount, recipient name, account number, sort code and booking reference. GPT4o vision can do this trivially. Why isn’t this in every banking app?
