Means you still have green feed available to put condition back on the ewes.

When the old boy ran F1 cattle we had to always be careful when to take calves off of mum for this reason.

Anecdotally this is a reason why some of my stud breeder contacts wean later than they really should (lambs over 60kg) because the ewes are still milking so much!

@Felix_Rams @Tedthekelpie You could do a rules based draft on age/drop first to separate lambs, and then by sex so lambs of each sex go two different ways and then anything not a lamb goes a third way

@Tedthekelpie Also drafting lambs from ewes probably hard due to the different sizes. Lots of our lambs would sneak in with ewes or get 2 in the crate. We draft ewes off and then get weight of lambs through drafter.

Stupid question for sheep RFID people. If you wanted to wean through an auto drafter and draft males from females from ewes, would you have needed to scan a gender into your computer at tagging?

@Tedthekelpie You either need to assign sex individually at marking OR record tag sequences of each sex and upload that data from Excel using your tag bucket list to match the VID with sex info to the EID. Then you can draft by sex.

@avalindphotog @jcressw3 @obhfrog It looks like rebate in NSW is only for infrastructure (of no benefit to the early adopters who have already invested in gear) and doesn’t include a tag subsidy, which is what most of the other states are doing

I’ve had an upgrade this lambing to a @ClipEx lamb box with sexing pedals. New systems bring new learnings but I love collecting this data to help us with our decision making. #sheeprock

Looking at auto drafters for sheep and goats (one unit for both) what are ppl experiences? Should we go air or electric?

@EnglandJengland @mrjengland I bought my Zebra barcode printer directly from Allflex and it wasn’t set up to talk with my stick reader! Trent at Riverina Wool Testers had the program to get it set up for me.

If people aren’t into buying gear from online, at AgInnovate we supply barcode scanners and printers at better prices than the usual places. Also don’t buy printers online or at office supplies. They won’t talk to your stick reader. #sheep

@sallymartin777 Thanks Sally that’s a good tip, I’ll try that next time. I only learnt in recent years about turning off the XR completely. I had only been sleeping it for years. Still do, it’s such an ingrained habit!

@sheep_data_mgmt Yes we have had it happen. I have found if you turn the XR off completely, don't just put it to sleep. When you turn it back on have the barcode reader plugged in. It is jot perfect but seems to fix whatever went wrong.

Has anyone had their TSU barcode scanner suddenly stop working on the XR5000? Seems like the USB port is stuffed? Happened to me a while ago before a job, then some weeks later started working again. Has now happened to a client. I’m stumped.

@CKMonty @sheepGeekCP @DavidSandow1 @sheepdataservic @StaceyLugsdin EID numbers are totally unique so there is never a duplicate across industry, but each farm could have a duplicate VID number to their neighbours every year. It’s not practical to not use the EID numbers ending in high digits just because they don’t match VIDs.

EID tags ready for Lamb Marking 2023. First year all lambs EID tagged, not just ewe lambs, tag buckets uploaded to indicator rather than VID manually entered. Breech wrinkle being collected at marking in non-mulesed flock. You can’t manage what you don’t measure. @StaceyLugsdin
