Voters started punishing "polished" elites with real solutions and rewarding "tells it like it is" outsiders who really just “tell them what they want to hear.” Reality TV, talk radio, and podcasts primed the pump. 👉🏼The Trump effect: He didn't invent coarseness—he weaponized it AT SCALE. Direct-to-audience tweets, nicknames ("Crooked Hillary," "Little Marco"), profanity in rallies, and now as president again, defending allies with DICK jokes. Are we serious here?! 👉🏼It has shattered the last pretense of presidential restraint. Opponents and allies alike matched the energy because— it works. Yes. We are partly to blame. Megyn Kelly throwing the first punch here shows it's bipartisan now. The trade-off? There is none. Yes, the old decorum often masked hypocrisy, exclusion, and boring elitism. "Civility" could be a cudgel to silence dissent. BUT—when everything is personal venom and zero-sum warfare, 👉🏼governance grinds to a HALT, trust evaporates, and normal people tune out or retreat into TRIBES. This decline directly correlates to rising cynicism and lower civic participation. So what "happened"? 💥 We democratized discourse without updating the guardrails. 💥 Technology made insults frictionless and profitable. 💥 Culture shifted from "leader as statesman" to "leader as entertainer/strongman." 💥 Incentives now punish restraint and reward escalation. Restoring it? It would require changing the platforms, the primaries, the media business model, 👉🏼AND voters actually rewarding adults over showmen. The filter is gone. What's left is raw, unvarnished crass America—warts, girth certificates, and all. Is this the America you want? The answer for me is NO.
