💰 Legislators want a raise because the job is a lot of work, the pay is too low, and legislative expenses are high. Ok. Let’s ask some questions that challenge the reasoning behind their call for more of our money. Why file more than 2,400 bills each session? Why meet every year? Why pass more than 200 new laws each session, especially laws that create even more expense for everyone else? And why waste session time on lobbyist shout-outs, special interest praise, birthday mentions, ceremonial fluff, and announcements that have nothing to do with actual lawmaking? Other states with larger populations meet less, pay less, and still manage to function. Let’s present a less costly solution: file and pass fewer bills, eliminate session time waste, and shorten the session.
