The ppl signaling their virtue by insisting the correct answer is blue, and only evil ppl would pick red dont really understand the question. It isnt a question about your OWN morality, but instead is a question of your perception of everyone else's morality. And it isnt even a measure of their "morality" but is actually a measure of their survival instincts. Betting against the survival instincts of 50% of the human species is a bad choice. Anyone who is facing this choice for real and had to think about it for more than 5 minutes would pick red, and more importantly, would council everyone they care about to pick red. Would you want your children to risk their life on 50% of the human species to bet against their own guaranteed survival? No decent parent would.

@theerealtao Can’t prove a negative. But 50+ years of experience on this world have demonstrated, to my satisfaction, that God is not necessary for the universe to exist, and that which is not necessary can be safely ignored. Your mileage may vary.

But here you don’t have to trust any individual, who may or may not betray you. You’re trusting people in general. People are mostly good, collectively speaking.

The problem here is that there is empirical data to support both: “The President is so loathsome that he would stage multiple assassination attempts to boost his popularity” AND “The President is so loathsome that multiple people would genuinely attempt to murder him”

@ElizabethGMat @MaryCarmenOrd If you press blue, you don’t have to trust all people, only a little over half. You can’t press red unless you’re OK with as many as 49% of people dying.

@learning_yohei In ancient times it was much worse: every verb had a completely separate word for present and past tense, often with no clear connection between the two at all. Then the Vikings came and beat some sense into us. It was the same with plurals (like tooth/teeth, child/children).
