This is going to be easier said than done. They have $50 million or so in projected space and three tradable first-round picks, none of which look especially valuable on paper. Let's be charitable and say Reaves fills the Kyrie role. Here's what they still need to match Dallas: - 48 minutes worth of starting-caliber center play. You can do this with two starting-caliber rim-protectors/rim-runners like Dallas did with Gafford/Lively, or you can do that with one high-end starting center plus Hayes filling in as the backup. I think he's gotten good enough to justify a role moving forward, but he's not Gafford or Lively, and the benefit of having both for Dallas was that they could both play enough to keep the other fresh. Not sure you want Hayes in a 50-50 timeshare, so getting someone who you'd want playing 30+ minutes gets expensive. - Three good 3-and-D wings. I'd say just based on durability and the aging curve, Smart is likely to be in the Josh Green role, best suited for 20ish minutes per game, kind of a shaky shooter. They don't have a Derrick Jones Jr. yet, someone big and athletic enough you can confidently put him on the best opposing perimeter player while at least making the wide open 3s. Don't think they have the PJ Washington yet either, who's just decent at the 3-and-D stuff but brings a bit of creation/bully ball to help out the offense. - A few scattered, helpful bench guys who do different things. Mavs had Kleber as a different front-court look and Hardaway as a bench flamethrower. I think LaRavia can play minutes as an eighth or ninth man. I'm open to keeping Kennard at the right price because they need the shooting. I'd want to keep Nick Smith, Kobe Bufkin, Adou Theiro and Drew Timme around and see if they can keep growing and hope one of them becomes a consistent rotation guy. But I wouldn't call any of these guys sure things. It's a tall order. They'll have the bullets for two or three big shots, but they're gonna have to hit on some stuff on the margins. They're four or five players away now, at least. That Dallas team was exceptionally well-rounded.
