In St. Louis, over a decade of gunshot detection data amounting to 29k alerts led to only *13* arrests directly tied to a gunshot alert. “High-volume agencies will likely experience substantial increases in their call volumes with remarkably little to show for it…”

If 80-90% of gunfire goes unreported, why wouldn’t you want to close that gap? Especially, if it had the potential to save 100+ lives in addition to other ancillary benefits. Still have not heard any reasonable argument against that proposition.

Not only is Detroit bound by contract to not release the location of ShotSpotter sensors, the company is not required to provide locations to police and "will challenge any subpoenas for this location any data." Well, @WIRED found them anyway. wired.com/story/shotspot…

Glad the wired story is bringing this into focus but it's been known that shotspotter coverage just so happens to be where the poor people of color are and isnt anywhere else

Also just for shouting into the void's sake lets look at a demographic map of the city on the left here (blue=majority white, orange=majority hispanic, green=black, red=asian) and on the right, the boundaries of Shotspotter surveillance. Wow would you look at that. Uncanny

A lot has been said about Shotspotter being used to surveil Black and Latinx communities but here in Minneapolis it’s also used to surveil indigenous communities. Look at this map; there are at least two mics in Little Earth. (h/t @joeyneverjoe)
