These two photos should awaken something in every single person who sees them. The rhetoric surrounding this woman has become so loud that much of society has forgotten the reality: most of her moments are not public appearances or headlines. Most of her moments are spent quietly grieving with her two precious young children. Children who most likely resemble their famous father in so many ways. Every smile, every expression, every milestone probably brings both joy and sorrow as they navigate life without him. This is what this is really about. The cruelty that has been openly displayed toward this little family has been staggering. At least in modern times, it feels unmatched. Somewhere along the way, compassion was replaced with cruel slander and gossip, speculation, and relentless judgment. We should all stop and ask ourselves: how did we get here as a society? Some people will rush to say it’s all her fault. That she smiled the wrong way. Wore the wrong thing. Said the wrong words. Guilty, guilty, guilty — with no real proof behind it, only anger and hatred. What are we doing? The internet is forever. Someday, these two precious children will see all of this. They will read the comments. They will come across names and posts and opinions from strangers discussing the worst tragedy of their young lives. When they come across your name, what feeling will it stir in their hearts? That might be something worth asking yourself.
