Please change this advice, it is not helpful and may lead to a false sense of security and tragic deaths.
"Lift up the base .." will do nothing:
Hedgehogs don't have the Flight or Fight Reflex that we, and most other mammals have. So when faced with danger or threat they will not run. Their reaction is to stay put, curl into a tight ball, and hope the threat goes away.
"..and listen for any noises.." will do nothing:
Hedgehogs are prey animals, so are very careful to keep silent when a predator (human) is about. So you won't hear any noises.
"..and light from one side only." will do nothing:
As the heat increases and smoke begins to fill the hedgehog's lungs, he will be terrified, and will try to evade the danger the only way he knows how - to curl up even tighter.
The only way to make a bonfire safe is to build it the same day you light it.
If you must build it in advance, then before you start you MUST erect a hedgehog-proof fence to enclose the area.
