@hell_line0 If you encounter the land whales which are common these days, you may change your mind. They are certainly not fertile and even if they were, very few male volunteers would ever attempt to fertilize them.

Birth rate is the correct term. Fertility rate insinuates that women are less fertile. Women aren’t less fertile. We just stopped wanting to have children with bad men in a bad, unsupportive, country.

@jaysbookman Not really. Property tax is the most regressive tax, hitting poorest people the most. Any tax reform needs to start with eliminating property tax on residential property.

Abolishing property taxes lifts the financial burden off those who own property and shifts it to those who do not own property. Given current wealth distribution, that’s a pretty bad idea.

@jimthegiant A lot of UK billionaires are foreigners. And they parked capital in the UK largely due to reliance on the rule of law, proximity to a big capital market like London, and the beneficial tax regime. If you mess with these 3, the rich will leave super fast. Just ask California.

@HOUrbanist because it is impossible to scale up any of the alternatives to where they become useful and actual alternatives. Right now, bike lanes and mass transit in Houston exist only in tiny pockets and are used as recreation not real transportation.

One of the favorite talking points of Euro-doomers is how the U.S. economy has been booming while Europe has stagnated into irrelevance. They love citing GDP statistics without much thought about what they measure and how adjustments are made for cross-country comparisons over time. Setting aside the problem with per capita measures not taking into account inequality (and so are not reflective of quality of life), there’s a much more serious problem with the overall measures, as explained in this helpful article by Seth Ackerman (sethackerman.substack.com/p/europes-prod…). When these issues are corrected as they have been in the newer Penn Tables measure, it looks like Europe is performing quite well even as the U.S. has delivered very strong recent growth and higher per capita output. Europe’s hourly productivity has also held up or improved (often linked to Europeans working fewer hours).

@brettachapman Westen civilization is centered around the rule of law and the maintenance of a high-trust society. The high economic output is only a consequence of good governance. All wealth redistribution ideologies such as your ramblings seek to destroy Western civilization as we know it.

Americans are finding its very hard to get a job in today’s job market “I just got denied from Walmart as a cashier. I have a f*cking master's degree, bro. I went to school for 12 years” He says he has applied for roughly 300 entry level positions with a masters degree “I have applied to over 300 companies and I've gotten response back from 11 of them. Why the f*ck do you think I'm applying to Walmart to be a cashier? Because no one is hiring. Why do you even post a job offering? You're not gonna hire anyone or respond.” Current job market data - Roughly 42% of recent college graduates (ages 22–27, bachelor’s or higher) are underemployed - This is also the case of advanced degrees - Right now data says it is not uncommon for job seekers to put in as many as 250 applications before getting a call back This is crazy

Property taxes should be outlawed. And before someone says “aLL tAxEs sHouLd be ouTlaWed” yes, but property taxes in particular are the most unjust. Every other tax is based on a share of a transaction. You always know upfront what this share will be. Property taxes, on the other hand, are based on a “value” assessed by the same entity levying the tax. Your town or county literally “decides” what your property is worth (assessed value) and then demands a share of it, regardless of your ability to pay. Fail to pay and they take the property for themselves. The model is actually worse than an unrealized gains tax; you aren’t just paying the tax on the gain, you are basically paying a percentage of whatever they decide the value is, every year in perpetuity. That’s why it’s is the most unjust tax. That’s why it should be abolished.

If there’s one country that has played its cards remarkably well and profited from both wars, it is China. It’s hard not to admire the cool and deliberate policies that have devoured Russia and undermined US global power by exploiting the imperial ambitions of the Kremlin and the utter idiocy of the liar at the White House.

@sp6runderrated Nonsense. Eliminating property tax puts money directly in the hands of citizens and takes it out of the hands of local bureaucrats. It would be the greatest economic stimulus ever. Property taxes are extremely regressive.

Eliminating property taxes will turn the US into UK 2. It would cripple the American Dream since every property owner will turn into a mega-nimby. The only places housing will be allowed are places no one wants to live.
