@smellygoosefoot@TheQuartering Are the Iranians currently running? Or are they refusing to give up. You aren’t dealing with random 19 year old rubes who have been told they’re getting 72 virgins. You’re dealing with a 3000 year old civilisation which has suffered worse than this.
@MahiFischer@TheQuartering You think they’ll be better off without power and drinking water in certain areas?
What about after their cultural heritage sites are bombed and damaged?
@BelleDreamer7@TheQuartering If you’re fighting a war with someone, you should care how they think.
In addition, because they kill their own citizens, should you join in and kill them too? Strikes me as odd
Egypt charge tolls for the Suez Canal.
Panama charge fees for the Panama Canal.
Turkey charge fees for Bosporus Strait.
Canada charge fees for the St Lawrence Seaway.
United States charge for the St Lawrence Seaway.
Iran kept the Strait toll free for decades and they are somehow still the terrible guys.
Iran has kept the Straight of Hormuz toll-free for decades despite being vilified, sanctioned, and Isolated.
Egypt charges $300,000 – $700,000+ per transit through the Suez Canal. Ultra-large container ships or tankers can exceed $1 million.
Panama charges $150,000 – $450,000 per transit. Large Neopanamax ships cost up to $500,000+ to pass the Panama Canal.
Turkey charges fees for the Bosporus Strait.
Canada charges fees for the St Lawrence Seaway.
The United States charges for the St Lawrence Seaway.
But Iran is a bad country.
@lorddrey Funny how the world condemns Iran for ‘selfishness,’ yet every other country literally monetizes strategic waterways. So keeping the Strait of Hormuz toll-free = evil, but charging millions = perfectly fine? Makes sense… if your definition of ‘bad’ is entirely political.
@Hunkleceejay2@lorddrey Iran controls the larger portion of the Strait. It has greater geographic dominance over the waterway, whilst Oman controls the Southern part through the Musandam peninsula, which is smaller in size and length.
@Favski_star233 This argument falls flat on its face since Turkey charges “fees” for the Bosporus strait under a “special convention”
Why does Turkey get to charge?
