I think this is an instructive endgame. 💡 Black seems to think that White's position is frozen, so he is pushing his Kingside majority. What is White's plan to win? 🤔 #chesspunks

Something trickier, from the same Scotch Gambit game. Everything's winning - I chose Bf6+, and after Rxf6 exf6 Qxe1+ Bf1, black has to sacrifice the queen on e7 to stop mate. But there *was* a forced mate in this position - I just didn't see it. Do you? #chess #chesspunks

LISTEN TO WHAT YOU ARE SAYING! YOUR ARGUMENT IS NONSENSICAL! WOULDNT YOU PASS A LAW TO STOP PEOPLE FROM BEING STRUCK BY LIGHTNING IF YOU COULD? YOU WANT TO ALLOW CHEATING BECAUSE IT DOESNT HAPPEN VERY OFTEN? Sadly, we know VERY WELL why you want the cheating to continue.
Senator Patty Murray@PattyMurray

The average person is more likely to be struck by lightning than they are to commit voter fraud. Seriously. That's a real stat. I'm voting NO on the SAVE America Act.

@MichelHoetmer 1 Kd6 Kc8 2 Ke5 and some different pawn pushes to consider here. 2...h4 3 Kxf5; 2...g4 3 h4; 2...f4, I think 3 Kxe4 works, though 3 exf4 (3...g4 4 hxg4 h4 5 Kxe4) seems simpler.

@vlad_chess Fascinating. Don't think black has enough time to capture h2, so 1 Ra2 f5 and black will manage to trade or queen?

In this position, I played Ra2 almost automatically, following the old adage that "rooks belong behind passed pawns." However, the resulting position is a tablebase draw. Can you do better and find the winning plan? The best move is easy (by elimination).

@RoizMichael83 One thing I can note is that at the moment, if the pawn were reach d5, black would have ...Ne3. Fun if the answer is Kh8.

A tough one. There is only 1 way to neutralize opponent's activity and convert the advantage. White to play.👩‍🎓

@mikeandallie I've been interested in what the rank of the perfect bracket would be, if one ordered them all by likelihood in some way. Seems like that should be doable now.

Perfect bracket odds are one of the most fun things to follow. Estimates can vary by many orders of magnitude. Those estimates have led to many really interesting conversations over the years.
Mike Beuoy@inpredict

2.6 billion to 1 The odds of a perfect mens tournament bracket this year, if you picked based on @kenpom ratings and assume that those ratings represent the true probabilities. That's better odds than last year, where I estimated a 10 billion to 1 chance.

@sylvesterkk @JayCuda Yeah, harmonic mean on ranks by itself is probably weighting top teams too heavily. Not sure what a good adjustment would be (maybe add like 10 to each rank). But it absolutely does treat the 350 as an almost free win, and would treat a 100 or 1000 (if it existed) similarly.

@silver83p @JayCuda I’m not as familiar with that but Claude gave me an answer I agree with: opponents ranked 5, 5, 350: ∙mean: 120 ∙GM: 34 ∙HM: ~8 That HM of 8 is saying the path is basically as hard as playing three top-8 teams, which is absurd — you still get a free win against no. 350

@avidseries Feels like the finishing kick is more evident in horse races. I suppose he first 200 also includes the reaction time and initial acceleration?

If you've followed me for very long, you know I like track. This is my favorite race of all time. Most people think Dave Wottle ran too slow at first, and then had to make up for it in a desperate kick at the end of the race. But this isn't true. In fact, each of his four 200 meters splits were roughly the same: 26.4, 27.1, 26.6, and 26.2 seconds. It was the other runners who miscalculated. They started too fast, and then paid the price later in the race. Wottle ran the perfect race: Disciplined, even-paced, didn't panic even when he was far behind, and then had plenty left in the tank for the final stretch.

It may be the greatest race of all time and a reminder of not ever giving up

@JayCuda Not really that insightful, should probably use geometric mean or something. UF is getting dragged down by playing by far the worst 16 seed, same with Nebraska. Using geometric mean Duke has by far the easiest F4 route, and for 4 seeds Arkansas does. Makes a lot more sense.
