@ramez Gulf states have AD guns that are cheap to use against drones. They just don't have the doctrine to use them properly. Which is where Ukraine experts can help.

With the attacks now occurring in Iran: remember that first reports are almost always wrong in war. And, just because no one is covering something on social media outside urban areas, it doesn't mean nothing is happening out there. Scope of strikes remains unclear.

@wolfejosh The models are fine but the UX and non-model features aren’t keeping pace with evolving use of the GenAi. As a product it is brittle with unnecessary memory bloat.

3/ ChatGPT is NOT MySpace (when it had 10x more users) And google is NOT Facebook (which got escape velocity ) But extrapolating early success sometimes results in lock-in effects or network effects (memory and pulse aim to habituate users) But sometimes doesn’t

1/ Clear directional arrow of progress My current bet is GOOGLE dominates next wave of AI because of screenshots, agentic computer-use, chrome browser, android, G suite (+ more trust and privacy and security rails) Google will 'DVR' with permission your screen + search and ACT across chats, imessage, whatsapp, chrome tabs, X, substack, Google searches, docs/sheets/slides, youtube i dont remember whether a piece of info was in twitter, a susbtack or a Slack post or a text or gmail...Google will

Growing up, I used to think a lot of history was British-ized for the lack of a better description. Egyptian History, Asian History, pretty much every discovery or expert in history was written by the British. Now I realize the British are perhaps one of the few ones left who are fascinated with history. All the YouTube videos I see of unknown regions are almost exclusively done by the British. All the excavations and historians that have something interesting to say. Something about the British that attracts them to adventure and history.

Peaks normally refer to periods of no more than a day, which means you can, by definition, cover them with batteries. For longer periods, the first solution is wind, which takes away ~80 of what's remaining. And THEN, what remains (usually called a "dunkelflaute"), that last 5-10% (in problematic regions), you solve with "firm" energy. But that's not enough for nuclear to make money. So, what else? My guess at the moment is: gas peakers for 5%, and then iron powder (or iron batteries), or methanol or hydrogen. My 2cts.

The real challenge for solar + storage is winter, not summer AC peak. Especially in places with short, cloudy winter days (US NE, Japan, Europe). Will increase as we electrify heating. Solar maximalists don't seem to understand this yet. It's one reason we need clean firm.

@WarintheFuture Isn't this many if not most organisations including Australian institutions? None really have a 'devils advocate' specifically tasked with challenging assumptions or doctrine with authority to force change.

4/ You can read my assessment of how sub-optimal Iranian learning and adaptation helped pave the way for Israel’s current take down of the Iran’s nuclear program, and possibly the Iranian regime, at this link: mickryan.substack.com/p/what-iran-di…

In war, stupidity and intellectual laziness gets punished. So, selection and development of good leaders matters. But, also punished is a suboptimal learning and adaption culture. A special assessment of what Iran should have learned from military conflicts in the past year - and didn't. 1/4

i saw crap like this in combat all the time.. reporters trying to get a great shot... they know where to stay but... this is not the intercetion, just an example. and the bean bag round (not a rubber bullet) has a horrible aim, and is only effective to about 50 ft.

Whether it’s Ukrainian journalists, VetTV, or individual accounts… The US Army should be trying to absorb as much knowledge on current conflict across the world. It could make all the difference in the next war.

The 3d Separate Assault Brigade (3AB) took shape at the start of Ukraine’s fight, known for their relentless defense during the Mariupol siege. In this short, @Veteran_TV embeds 4km from Russian territory with their night assault platoon, artillery support, and drone teams, capturing the firsthand experience of facing Russian forces head-on. People don’t really talk enough about the Polish YIMBY success story. For a country to grow so rapidly and see housing costs relative to income go *down* is extremely unusual!
