@JJ_McCullough Yeah that's fair. I view it as a good thing as it means that the MP you actually vote for matters. They aren't just a figurehead for the party. It does, however, make the minority/majority narrative on election night simplistic, especially in extreme cases like this.

On election night, Canadians elect a majority or minority government. It’s called on TV and everything. If MPs have no firm loyalty to a party, however, then the whole concept of majority/minority governments stops making sense. Even having a prime minister stops making sense.

@JJ_McCullough For sure, but "who has the most seats" is not fixed at election day. We can have a completely different government and prime minister all without an election.

These two images were taken by @astro_reid only minutes apart. The stark difference is the result of camera settings. In the first, a longer shutter speed let in much more light from Earth, while the shorter shutter speed in the second emphasizes our planet's nighttime glow.

@MattSpoke This is what Doug Ford does all the time and you criticize him for. The Crown Royal dumping is exactly what you are calling for, is it not?

More politicians should speak their mind without doing the political calculus first. Agree with them or don’t, but at least we’d know what they think and we’d see them act on what they believe. Kudos @jamiljivani for setting an example that I think we should demand from more of our elected officials.

There is no system to find out if what you see on a property was done without permits.. because there is no record of it being done. Basically this is what title insurance is for.

This is so incredibly common, that houses are purchased where previous owners did work without permits. Parkdale, WQW, … all over old Toronto I’m more surprised when there is a house that DOESN’T have work done without a permit. Gord is 100% blameless here.

@JJ_McCullough What does a pro-american approach look like? It seems like the only acceptable response the US will take is to capitulate.

Trump is bad, and one of the bad things about him is he brings out bad sides of other people. Carney chose to cynically take advantage of an anti-American mood in the country and run the most anti-American campaign in decades. Liberals can excuse it, but it has consequences.
Alan Fryer 🇨🇦🇺🇦🇮🇱@alanfryermedia

Carney can't be blamed for the fact we're dealing with an erratic, irrational and vindictive US President. But we knew who Trump was and in the election Carney convinced enough Canadians that his resume and temperament made him the best choice to deal with Trump and fix our trading relationship with America. Instead, he seems to be making things worse.

What the fuck? “Ontario didn’t forecast the big wave of immigrants?” They asked for it, FFS. Google it, Mike. I’m sick and tired of our shitty punditocracy letting Ford — the guy literally responsible to house Ontarians — off the hook for his failures. Brutal.

@Adam_Giambrone I wonder if they could come take a field trip for an afternoon to Waterloo? Here’s how the LRT runs in Waterloo. Trains don’t stop for intersections; the lights are all timed perfectly and the train rides a wave through them, smoothly and efficiently.

Action is needed now to make signal priority work for Finch + Eglinton LRTs and get TTC to focus on strong operations. Both are needed and with leadership could (must) happen more quickly than states timelines. Riders deserve better and so do taxpayers. apple.news/AMzDd-_hJS56sK…

There's no need in the modern world for just one government budget. With information technology, every citizen should be able to choose a budget that reflects their values. Politicians could then just lobby citizens on where to allocate their tax dollars. @grok does this type of government exist, or is it defined?

Roger Federer broke the internet with one statistic that will change how you see every setback in your life. 1,526 singles matches. Won almost 80% of them. 20 Grand Slams. 103 titles. Now answer honestly: What percentage of total points do you think he won across his entire career? 70%? 65%? 60%? Try … 54%. He lost literally almost EVERY SECOND POINT he ever played for 24 years. And still became one of the greatest of all time. Watch him explain it himself (2:07 of pure life-changing wisdom): “In tennis, perfection is impossible… When you lose every second point on average, you teach yourself to say: ‘Okay, I double-faulted — it’s only one point.’ ‘Okay I got passed at the net — it’s only one point.’ Even a screaming overhead smash that ends up on SportsCenter Top 10… still just one point. So when you’re playing your point, it has to be the most important thing in the world. The moment it’s over — it’s behind you. That mindset frees you to attack the next point, and the next, and the next with absolute intensity and clarity.” Then he looked at the crowd and said the line that hit a billion people in the soul: “The real sign of a champion is not that they win every point. It’s that they lose again and again and again… and have learned how to deal with it. Negative energy is wasted energy. Cry it out if you have to. Then force a smile. Move on. Be relentless. Adapt. Grow. Work harder — and work smarter.” Save this post. The next time you lose a deal, bomb a presentation, get ghosted, miss a deadline, or just have “one of those days” — come back here and read it again. You’re not falling behind. You’re just in the 46%. And the 46% is exactly where every single legend has spent most of their career. Keep playing the next point. (full 2:07 clip — sound on)

@EricDLombardi I'm not sure there was ever a time when this dynamic didn't exist, at least since the 20th century. Is there really any major construction project in Canada (or any other democracy) that hasn't had to overcome local opposition? This is table stakes for building in a democracy.

A couple dozen farmers at most not agreeing with a high speed rail line is no excuse not to build it nor does it justify years of delay. We used to be a serious country.
John Cruickshank@JACruickshank

@EricDLombardi Im curious about what the Ontario Federation of Agriculture thinks about this? If the farmers don't agree with this (and historically they haven't) it will stop this cold. The route goes through a lot of rural ridings where the MP's won't want to fight with their farmers.

@rpoconnor The maps were being updated anyway because of the LRTs. So that cost would always have been necessary. Also, if you think TMU is meaningless, ask people about Osgoode or st. Andrew!

Renaming Dundas subway station to TMU will cost the Toronto public $400,000 in new transit maps alone - yet the new station signs still read "Dundas", presumably because "TMU" is geographically meaningless to most transit users. Great job, City Council!

@PhilippeLagasse This discussion is exactly why it's so good to have politicians making the ultimate decisions. With so much nuance and competiting priorities, the ultimate decider has to be democratically accountable. The role of politics in this decision is a good thing.
