A four-year-old boy once drank water from a toilet bowl in a Bavarian orphanage because he hoped prospective parents would notice him. His name was Rob Pilatus. Born to a German mother and an American soldier, he was abandoned at birth and adopted into a German family where he grew up abused, isolated, and relentlessly bullied as the only Black kid in his neighborhood. As a teenager, he escaped through dancing, modeling, and performing. He wanted what every neglected child wants: To be seen. In 1988, Rob met Fab Morvan. Two broke young men chasing fame. A producer named Frank Farian offered them stardom. There was one catch. They wouldn’t actually sing. Other men had recorded the vocals. Rob and Fab were hired to be the faces. They tried to refuse, but they were broke and trapped in contracts they didn’t understand. Then everything exploded. “Girl You Know It’s True” sold 11 million copies. #1 hits. MTV fame. Sold-out arenas. A Grammy. For the first time in his life, Rob felt chosen. Then the backing track skipped during a live performance. The truth came out. The producer confessed he had built the entire deception, but Rob and Fab became the global punchline. The Grammy was revoked. Lawsuits followed. The media mocked them nonstop. What people forget is this: Rob Pilatus did not invent the fraud. He was a young man exploited by an industry that wanted an image more than a person. The producer who created the lie stayed rich and powerful. Rob became the joke. The humiliation destroyed him. Suicide attempts. Addiction. Jail. Rehab. Years later, Rob finally got the chance to record music using his real voice. A comeback tour was planned for April 1998. The night before the first show, Rob Pilatus died alone in a hotel room. He was 32 years old. One day away from finally singing for real. Most people still remember Milli Vanilli as a scandal. They should also remember it as the story of a broken kid who spent his entire life trying to earn the love and validation the world kept taking away from him.

@Hazel_qs I’ve always thought Chloe and Zoey were awful names. Sounds so childish and immature to me. Gramma Chloe?!?! Eww!

What baby name instantly makes you lose respect for the parents? Mine is “Treblinka.” I heard a mother calling for her daughter at my son’s kindergarten and genuinely thought I misheard it at first. Then she said it again. “Treblinka.” My stomach dropped. For anyone who doesn’t know, Treblinka was one of the deadliest Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. I lost much of my family because of the Holocaust. My grandmother and great aunt were the only survivors left, and I lost both this year. So hearing someone casually use that as a child’s name honestly shocked me. I eventually asked the mother where she got the name from. She smiled and said: “I heard it somewhere once and thought it sounded beautiful.” She had absolutely no idea what it meant. And somehow that made it worse. Because it meant: nobody in the family recognized it nobody at the school recognized it nobody processing the birth registration recognized it Literally nobody stopped and thought: “Wait… isn’t that a concentration camp?” I’m not even angry. Mostly just disturbed by how disconnected people have become from history. One day that little girl is going to google her own name and realize what she was named after.

Spiking fuel prices from Trump’s war was the nail in the coffin for twice-bankrupted Spirit airline. FWIW, JetBlue merger failed because a judge, appointed by Ronald Reagan, said the deal was illegal. Republicans are desperate to shift blame from higher costs hitting families.

@MixtapeTheology I think early Newsboys videos could be considered iconic! I love the Dear Shame video and (dating myself here) learning the dance at beginning of One Heart with my friends!

@Ineverglow JoC should take this! This is about albums, and talk about an album that crossed into different genres. Pretty remarkable for a CCM artist to get into secular charts SUCCESSFULLY!! Mullins is an icon, but JoC is the obvious choice for best album! (A personal fav album also)❤️
