Here's why the narrative of Arsenal is going to be the 'worst EPL champions' has developed.
Yesterday, at TalkSport, Jamie O'Hara and crew spent significant time discussing how Leeds United would get a result against the Gunners to ensure that by today, the league leaders would be 1 point ahead of number 2. They were not alone. This was the average opinion.
Any other football fan and pundit affiliated to other teams and clubs and not Arsenal, wanted or expected Leeds to do something. It didn't happen. The Gunners beat Leeds United 4-0 at Elland Road.
So what goes on next? You begin to see tweets and posts about set-pieces and own-goal attacking Arsenal. You can see their anger and frustration that Leeds have not done the job. They say, 'You can't win the league with set-pieces and own goals!' and many more similar tweets.
Jamie O'Hara comes again and says, 'No one will remember this Arsenal team.' Here's the interesting part. Jamie is making an admission, but he has to acquiesce while at it. He doesn't like what he saying, and that he has to say it, that Arsenal will win the league. But he has to say it, anyway, because it is inevitable, and denying it now would make him look foolish.
So, he has to say something that makes his ego feel better. He drags Arsenal down and says the above statement. He is not alone. Last week, Paul Scholes said that the Gunners will be the 'worst' side to win the English Premier League. He too, was making an involuntary and forced admission that Arsenal are the champions in waiting, only that he doesn't like it. He made it known, again, disguised in the language of punditry or feigned foolishness that masquerades as intelligible speech.
How did we get here apart from the obvious fact that it is Arsenal versus the rest?
The Gunners are doing the impossible in the minds and hearts of many. Remember they said that they'd crumble in December? When Arsenal went ahead to have a spectacular December and Christmas, they pushed it to January, which the Gunners cruised past while still ahead of the rest.
They don't like this. In the last season, these were the months where the Gunners would have 'bottled' the league in their language and expectations. On the contrary, this season, that's not happening. So they get mad and angry. Their hypotheses are thwarted. Their realities are challenged. They feel bad that Arsenal is defying their expectations. So they come with narratives to express their dissatisfaction and frustrations.
Is there a way that the Gunners could score more set pieces and own goals? That is what we now need. Paul Scholes say Arsenal don't score enough goals, and are struggling to score. By STATS that matter, Arsenal score 23 UCL goals, the most prolific side in group stages, and right now have 46 goals in the EPL, one behind City, who in their world, score the most goals.
