Workers spend more of their income than the wealthy. But our nation has been taxing workers *more* and the wealthy less. Wealth as a share of UK GDP has doubled since the Thatcher era. But tax revenue from wealth only rose by 35% over the same period. That's anti-growth.

"Well Josh, did your Mum happen to mention that she'll be able to save £1.64 on the family entry to Legoland during the summer"? "Yes Mr Starmer, and she asked me pass on her thanks. She told me to tell you she plans to take us twice in the holidays. That way she'll save over £3 which will be enough to buy a can of coke for us all to share". "That's marvellous Josh. I'm happy to help".

@LeeJarvis10 It’s fantastic. It only really loses its way in the final two seasons when the producers had had enough of it al.

Deindustrialisation and the continued wilful ignorance by every group of politician for 40 years to pretend that a service industry & financialization of our economy could replace our big heavy industries & industrial heartlands has come to an end. We are a broken divided & diminished country. Unless we have an economic plan of reindustrialising the country I fear that our decline will be permanent & divisions dystopian
Ben Glover@bengglover

What unites Blue Labour and the soft left? What unites the old right and the Socialist Campaign Group? I've written for @NewStatesman on how reindustrialisation can unite Labour - and what that means for 'Manchesterism'. 1/

The weirdest thing about the “europoor no AC” discourse is that there is AC everywhere in Southern and Eastern Europe so this is obviously not a financial issue. It is an ideological issue in Northwestern Europe, which is admittedly even funnier.

@CasinoCapital @RemindMe_OfThis I was thinking about this and the time zone of the matches isn’t that conductive to people going to the pub to watch the games. I think the Latin American brewers $ABEV and $CCU are likely to be the big winners from your thesis.

Nirgends.

@Woodywudpeck @sionster @TheSecretAcct If u have non-ISA shares paid out cash dividend, u gets a tax-free Dividend Allowance of £500. Any dividends over £500 are taxed at 10.75% for basic-rate earners. If u sold shares outside an ISA this year at a loss, they can be deducted from £10k profit to reduce the tax bill

For individuals I think the ISA allowance and SIPP are sufficient tax free wrappers. If you can invest more than £68k a year (£20k ISA and £48k net SIPP contribution) you can afford income tax on gains after indexation allowance (taking inflation into account). For owner managers there should be a £1m lifetime allowance with income tax on the excess gain but with indexation allowance. Therefore husband and wife get £2m. Property and other assets - income tax after indexation allowance. Main residence no tax. Those are my thoughts. What do you think?

@sionster @TheSecretAcct Pensions are deferred income. Very simple to tax them as income when people receive their pension, stupidly complex to value them as wealth. So why should we change from paying income tax on pensions to paying a wealth tax?

@TheSecretAcct Basic rate tax payers already pay 18% on capital gains so to go to 20% isn’t much of a change. It’s at the higher rates the gap is, strangely, much bigger. Yes to indexation and a simple way of administering it. I’d also keep the £3k allowance.

@TheSecretAcct I'm still trying to find out what happens if you don't pay income tax? Does the cgt allowance rise to c£12k before you then start paying basic rate above that?
