The Indus Waters Treaty is dying. Here’s what that means for Pakistan. What just happened: On May 15, the international court at The Hague ruled clearly — the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty is legally binding. India cannot suspend it alone. India’s attempts to store extra water through its Ratle and Kishanganga dams on Pakistan’s allocated rivers — rejected. Pakistan won. Completely. On every legal point. India’s response — word for word: “Null and void. The court is illegally constituted. Our suspension remains unchanged.” India didn’t appeal. Didn’t engage. Simply refused to recognise the court’s existence. So what does this mean? The court has no army. It cannot force India to open a single valve. The Permanent Indus Commission — the joint body created to manage disputes — hasn’t met since April 2025. Since India’s suspension, data sharing, joint inspections, and flood forecasting cooperation have all stopped  — Pakistan is now managing its rivers partly blind. Why it matters for ordinary Pakistanis: 90% of Pakistan’s farmland is irrigated by the Indus system. Millions of farmers across Punjab and Sindh depend on these flows. And India is not standing still — New Delhi continues expanding hydropower projects on the western rivers, building facts on the ground that no court ruling can demolish.  Pakistan’s options — honestly: ✅ Keep winning in court — the legal record is unambiguous and expanding ❌ Enforcement — none. The World Bank guaranteed this treaty in 1960 and has said nothing meaningful in 2026 ❌ Bilateral dialogue — the joint commission is dead ❌ Military pressure — two nuclear states. Catastrophic risk. The verdict — honestly: Pakistan has done everything right. It went to court. It argued on law. It won — twice. The legal record is now unambiguous and growing. India has done everything strategically. It ignored the court, kept building, and accumulated facts on the ground that rulings cannot touch. International law is clear: the treaty is binding, India is in breach, and the world’s arbitration institutions have said so repeatedly. But clarity on paper has not moved a single drop of water. The consequences of this gap are not abstract. Pakistan’s agriculture feeds 220 million people on water that now flows at India’s discretion. Every new Indian dam quietly tightens that grip. Every year without the joint commission is a year of zero early warning on floods, droughts, and upstream diversions. Analysts warn that any water-related confrontation between two nuclear-armed neighbours carries consequences far beyond the region.  Pakistan is on the right side of law, history, and every international institution that has examined this dispute. The question in 2026 is no longer who is right.
