When do we first meet the antagonist in your book? 🤔 In Flight, we meet the taskmaster right away in chapter 1 as he checks that the main character is doing his job. #WritingCommunity #writingq

@deidrejowen I’d order a printed proof copy (through KDP or Barnes & Noble Press). It’s way cheaper than paying for the ink to print it at home or having it printed somewhere like Staples. 😅

Have you ever printed off your whole novel? I’m thinking of printing mine! But how do you physically manage reading and working with a STACK of paper? Do you put it in a binder or something?

You mean to tell me there are people who intentionally LOWER the wordcount of their books when they're revising? Couldn't be me! I'm struggling just to get out of novella wordcount territory!

No. But they can go find & talk to the first author to publish a book called Sidetracked, Borderline, or Afterglow if they really want. lmao You can’t copyright or trademark a ONE-WORD title, and I’m a nobody, anyway—certainly not a threat to a big-name author’s sales. 🥴

Indie authors: If an established author contacted you to ask that you change the title of one of your self-published books because their latest release will use the exact same title, would you consider their request? Or would you refuse, or demand financial compenstation?

@deidrejowen I use my initials, but it’s only because I felt like “SK Kelley” looked better on a book cover than “Sam Kelley”

If you are a female author/scholar, do you write under initials or a pseudonym to prevent gender bias? Feel free to comment and discuss.

@GoreMagick I have too many ideas & like to write my characters talking about things that don’t matter for way too long. The first completed draft of my last book was *215,000* words, and I got it down to just over 198,000. lmao

how do people write first drafts longer than their final product? i've never understood that.

Being an indie author means crafting your own path. But how do you find the balance between writing for yourself and writing for your readers?

@louverlover @ozyfrantz I broke down crying multiple times bc the WIC app said a certain item (the exact brand, size, flavor, etc) was covered but it didn’t ring up as covered. Even though I had the money to cover it, it was still extremely frustrating & I was hormonal due to being postpartum. lmao

I worked at a grocery store and no one ever broke down crying over WIC. Its pros massively outweigh its cons. There were some people for whom it was a little annoying but more often than not they needed a translator or clarification and then they were set. We had a reference 8.5"x11" 2 sided sheet with pictures and matching foods. People are smart enough to handle that without breaking down.

there exists a welfare program where you can't buy unhealthy/"expensive" food, it's called WIC, and it's awful. I have a friend who worked at a grocery store and regularly watched people break down crying because they picked a kind of chickpeas WIC doesn't cover
