@slapout9 @EODHappyCaptain Yeah, that was just SOP. Holes in the tailboom were a rite of passage.😁🚁 Our smoke ship (laid down a smoke screen around the LZ) had so many tailboom patches it was finally out of weight & balance limits. 🤣

When did you first realize the weight or importance of your job? For me, it was when we had just arrived in Afghanistan. I had graduated EOD school less than a month earlier. While we were en route on the plane, Captain Jason McMahon, the company commander for our sister unit, was mortally wounded. Everyone rushed to the hospital to say their farewells. He was a prior NCO and absolutely loved by everyone. The next day I was tasked to be a Rifle Bearer at his ramp ceremony. I remember standing there as his flag draped casket was loaded onto the aircraft and feeling the enormity of the task that lay ahead. I probably mentally aged 10 years in that moment.
