If it were variable, a complete rewrite of physics would be needed e.g. Maxwell's equations, special relativity, which is an issue as they describe reality so accurately and no exceptions have been found

Actually it's kinda wild. The ISU officially fixed c to its current value in 1983. c will always be 299,792,458 m/s
That means, if c ever changed, the way SI units is set up, it wouldn't register. Instead the value of a meter would. I'm terrible at explaining this, so @Grok please explain the self-referencing problem with c and how it makes wobbles in its value virtually impossible to register.

@Aelthemplaer Isn't part of that problem is that they're using more sensitive devices to measure it but they use lasers, meaning they're using light to measure itself? I had heard something along those lines years ago but never looked into it.
