@TonyReinke For Hebrew, I use a combination of Williams’ Hebrew Syntax, edited by the inestimable John Beckman, for grammar and Matthew Patton’s Hebrew Discourse workbook. Waltke/O’Connor is flawed IMO; J-M cumbersome; Gesenius archaic and needs updating.

William Wallace’s Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics was the gold standard for a long time. A friend asked of there better advanced syntax and grammars for Greek and Hebrew? What’s being used today?

@Timothy_A_Lee A digital version of Isaiah, pretty please🥹. Either way, amazing work you’ve got. Love the Orion Center and the Mandel Institute.

@slbyun We'll see how it all goes, it was suggested that I could digitise all the Isaiah volume so they are more widely accessible! I'm also going to pitch Tov's parallel synopsis project to him next week - I could do that quite quickly!

@Timothy_A_Lee I knew that… remembering that the XII was being worked on by Noam and others. Glad to see that’s out, too! Best wishes on the project! HUB is one of the best resources for TC imo.

@Timothy_A_Lee If I’m not mistaken, Tov argued for two different scribes hence slight differences between 1-33/34-66. Am intrigued and excited to read this. Am also persuaded by bisectioning but haven’t thought through Vorlage possibilities…

@slbyun Bisectioning in the Septuagint at mid-points is certain (Jeremiah, Exodus, Kingdoms) so I assume different Vorlage unless proven otherwise. But I defer to Hugh Williamson and Drew Longacre on the specifics on the Isaiah Scroll.

Ancient scrolls weren’t just copied—they were scrambled! Orthographic quirks in the Great Isaiah Scroll and the LXX reveal deep editorial chaos! My latest Open Access article appears in the Festschrift for Robert Hanhart, who saw the volume shortly before his death at 100.

For those interested in the distribution of כי and כיא across 1QIsa(a) see here! Note the change after chapter 33 indicating a different Vorlage was used by the scribe. (Other data backs this up).

Just landed in San Diego, with a clear diary for the day. Any recommendations for places to eat, things to do, coffees or beers to try, or people to meet?

@drjohnmeade @Balduc13679 But I do agree with Nicholas that the Septuagint/OG texts are vitally important for Christians! I stand by that point.

The Church cannot be separated from its history and origins. In the thread will be a variety of sources showing the connection between the apostles/church fathers and the Septuagint. Denying the connection to the Second Temple Jews and EC is to deny known history of the Church.
John Meade@drjohnmeade

@Balduc13679 Not a single church father refers to “The Septuagint.” That’s the first problem. The second problem is that all early Greek canon lists depend either explicitly or implicitly on the Hebrew canon. Do the reading and then let’s continue to chat.

@drjohnmeade @Balduc13679 @DrPJWilliams voice lives rent free in my head saying, “there’s no such thing as the Septuagint.” In all seriousness, if I’m tracking correctly, no, too many generalizations being made about “the Septuagint” and canon. I’m not great with Twitter debates so I’ll leave it there.

@K_L_Phillips Great summary @K_L_Phillips One reason the debate is at an impasse is disagreement in knowing how to place Hebrew linguistic strata in specific time periods (LBH, CBH or otherwise). Sounds like a future project for @Tyndale_House 😁

Fun fact. Jesus never said there’s no marriage in heaven. He said there’s no marriage in the resurrection (Luke 20). People aren’t resurrected in heaven. They await their resurrection on earth when Christ returns TO earth FROM heaven (1 Thess 4)

@charles_loder @evan_vossman Young, Rezetko, Ehrensvard have more recent volumes for sure (and more to come). The arguments against them largely come from Hebrew University usually in articles and Jewish volumes, and more tangential but Na’ama Pat-El and Aren Wilson-Wright also have some interesting pieces.

Hey theology twitter - I'm looking for a new bible language app, since biblearc seems to no longer be available as a free app. I figure there aren't too many choices. Needs GNT, MT, LXX. Any preferences?

My editor at Baylor UP is asking me if I have a preference between footnotes and endnotes. His thought is that endnotes make the text more friendly for readers, particularly non-specialists. Should I have strong feelings about which format is better?
