Despite his jokes about a third term, Trump knows this is all that’s left of his time as President.
It’s for that sober reason that I actually trust a bit of what he’s doing.
I feel like he sees 3 main goals, and no matter how ugly or unpopular, he sees it as America’s last chance to make things right again.
Iran?
I believe he knows they’re more of a threat than most would have you believe and he sees two decades of playing Iran’s games had made that threat legit. So he’s essentially trying to set them back 10 years or so.
Illegal Immigration?
I believe he feels that if it wasn’t stopped in its tracks, there’d be no meaningful elections within 5 years. I also think he saw the cost of so many illegals in his first term and figured “it’s gotta stop”.
Trade?
I’m a small time business guy and even I know that all trade since NAFTA has been anything but fair trade. So I think he was willing to do the unpopular thing and make imports less worth the undercutting of the American jobs that it had been for 30 years… and that while it may cost more, it’s even costlier (in the national security sense) to not have the most advanced and productive manufacturing in the world.

The great sin of Donald Trump is that in his second term he rejected all of the "experts" and brought in outsiders to fix the havoc and damage wreaked by the "experts."
And golly gee do the "experts" hate it.
At this point we have a cadre of failed "experts" doing everything they can to sabotage the vitally necessary reform of their sins.
Pretty much everything happening in American politics today can be understood through this prism.
