Our @YahooSports story on a wild Friday evening: The Big Ten and SEC may be on the brink of striking a deal with lawmakers over the Protect College Sports Act. The 11th-hour scramble included engagement from Donald Trump and new circumvention language bit.ly/44Wm1H0

Big Ten presidents and chancellors are moving toward a vote to support the Protect College Sports Act, sources tell @YahooSports, though the results are not finalized. Negotiations today resulted in additional changes to the bill. SEC presidents are scheduled for an evening call

@ThePMGN @wesj_42 100%. Friend of ours had his lifelong tickets revoked. They encourage you to use the marketplace but can take away. 3 kids under 11, we can’t do all home games so we pick 2 and sell others. Am I just supposed to eat the cost?

The official ticket marketplace of Georgia football because they can give their data to the athletic department and snitch on ticket holders who sell their tickets too many times. Capitalism for me but not for thee.

Kisner on Sam Burns: I personally would take -10 if I'm him. I would feel confident that number wins. Kisner (15 minutes later) on Bryson (who is four back): I think he's just a little too far back. He's going to have to really light it up on the front nine.

@BudElliott3 The athletic directors want job security…that’s all…you are changing what games are meaningful…and 8-4 vs. 8-4 won’t garner the same amt of money…also cbs is a part of the big ten coalition so it’s understandable why you are stumping for 24 teams

Why would they think this? The biggest edge for the SEC in terms of actual additional access gained is 16. 🧠The reason why these athletic directors love going to 24 is the additional meaning it will bring to the regular season for those mid- and low-mid-tier SEC schools who are going to be playing meaningful games after Halloween. Athletic directors are smart enough to understand this.

The College Football Playoff expansion to 24 teams needs to include all FBS Conference Champions with less than 4 losses. Paul Finebaum only cares about blue blood programs. But College Football has the greatest regular season in all of sports because of every team, fan and conference at all levels of it. So expanding the FBS College Football Playoff to include all FBS conference champions with less than 4 losses makes the regular season mean even more for ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

The peak of college football does not happen in mid-October. Most fans tune out because their teams are 3-3 and move on to the NFL playoff races. #bigbrandpate is leaving out the scrapper programs, the ball knowers showing up in the cold rains of November when their team has no chance at the playoff. Do they not deserve to dream of playoff glory as well?

Maybe. But which is a better ending for the year, 22 seed USC giving up 58 points to lose a playoff game while ten million people watch the game or USC giving up 58 points to lose the Sun Bowl in front of 8,432 fans in El Paso on a random Tuesday afternoon in December?
Josh Pate@JoshPateCFB

@ClayTravis (Most) And Lincoln Riley is still shown the door at 8-4 regardless of whether he locks down the 22-seed in the process.

@GrahamCoffeyDC Fans don’t like ESPN. While Fox isn’t exactly great the fans don’t care ESPN vs. Fox. ESPN has ruined almost all sports it covers.24 teams is going to happen when the Big XII & ACC which ESPN has or will be destabilize are on board with 24 and ESPN isn’t. ESPN/SEC will lose this.

Petitti said the Big Ten would agree to a 16-team CFP if the SEC played 9 league games. The SEC did. Pettiti moved the goalposts and refused to match the SEC’s rule on playing 10 P4 teams. He’s fighting a proxy war on Fox’s behalf. Nothing he says should be taken seriously.

@iambigjoe89 @ugamoonpie @PeteThamel You contradicted yourself. Yes Indiana earned their spot by winning. Not with some playoff expansion (rule change) because they could not rise to the top. You are arguing for less effort and accountability all around the landscape of the sport for those programs not going all in

@slmandel @TheFWAA The 24 team playoff would print money...which may be why SEC is against it When paying players was a violation...the SEC had no problem paying players. Now that it is legal...it's booster base doesn't have the money to compete with Big 10

One vexing question hovers over the 24-team CFP push: Who’s going to pay for it? ESPN was the only bidder last time and is clearly against 24. Fox wants 24 but is not exactly swimming in cash. The conferences need at least $250M to make it work. nytimes.com/athletic/72910…

@slmandel It’ll be fine. The streamers will glad pay up for it. It’s already checkmate for the SEC now that B12 and ACC are on board. B10 can offer G6 two slots and give ND a guarantee, and it’s all over. SEC can have their isolated ecosystem, or join everyone else. B10/Fox just won.

@BudElliott3 The 24 also helps the ACC & B12 as schools in those conferences can also develop a rationale to spend more. The real loser is the SEC who stand to have their teams risk losing to “lesser” conference brands/teams.

I think 24 is way better than 12 for a lot of reasons completely or mostly unrelated to the Big Ten, detailed here cfbuds.beehiiv.com/p/bud-elliott-… But I think one of the reasons why 16 doesn't work for the Big Ten is that the Big Ten knows it stands to benefit the most from an expansion to 24. This is because 24 actually aligns incentives for the second-tier Big Ten programs to start spending, because there's real line of sight to payoffs. 16 makes that path considerably less less incentivized.
Ross Dellenger@RossDellenger

Tony Petitti says a 16-team playoff doesn’t give enough access and doesn’t work economically as you’d still need to eliminate conference title games, which - as previously reported - are valued at a combined $200 million. He doesn't believe you can make up that number with 16.

@BudElliott3 Are you serious with this take? Bottom feeder Indiana just won the National championship. If you are a middle tier program in the big ten, you choose to be. Having a 24 team playoff is a participation trophy and will ruin the regular season and not add much revenue to the schools

@iambigjoe89 @SteimyC @PeteThamel A shot at what exactly? A meaningless round 1 game that no one watches? Here’s a way to have access to the playoff. 1. Hire a good coach 2. Recruit well and manage NIL. 3. Play better football See Indiana. Expanding the playoffs does nothing for the sport.
