My mother was angry with a supermarket cashier for years. She said the cashier was rude, cold, and always gave her dirty looks. Every time she went, the woman barely spoke. She never smiled, never made conversation. One day, my mother forgot her wallet after paying. She only realized it when she got home. Twenty minutes later, someone knocked on the door. It was the cashier. She had just finished her shift and walked over in the rain to return it. My mother, confused, said, “I thought you didn’t like me.” The woman was silent for a few seconds. Then she replied, “I work ten hours a day. I have anxiety attacks. And I make a huge effort just to be able to talk to people.” Sometimes we mistake tiredness for contempt. And we wage entire wars against people who are just trying to survive.
