“Paktyawal, a father of six, began working with Army Special Forces in 2005 in a province called Paktika in southeast Afghanistan. He and his family were evacuated by the United States in August 2021 after the fall of the country.” Mr. Paktyawal, an Afghani interpreter, and countless other interpreters like him, risked everything to serve American forces while we were in Afghanistan for nearly two decades. After we departed the country and the Taliban took over, interpreters who remained in country were hunted, and they and their families were killed. Mr. Paktyawal, however, was treated as they all should’ve been: timely evacuated to safety to live his days in the country he served. That is until Trump came along, of course, and seized him while he was taking his kids to school, and dumped him in a caged pen where he lasted 24 hours. Everything possible that could be wrong IS wrong with this. Does America have any honor left at all? Do we??!!! Well, let me say this honorable servant interpreter was killed by Trump and his masked forces, and if Justice is more than a word then someone in Texas government should immediately open an investigation into Mr. Paktyawal’s untimely death. Y’all may not know that my day job is mediating Defense Base Act cases -I post a notice of each mediation on my personal Facebook and LinkedIn pages. The DBA docket is an exemplar of American Justice: they are injury claims brought by American and foreign military contractors injured while serving in zones of special danger like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia and elsewhere. Interpreters like Mr. Paktyawal are military contractors covered under The Act. I’ve mediated thousands of these claims, and many of them for Afghani nationals and Afghani Americans who provided valuable interpretation in a totally “you could die every day” hostile environment. He survived Afghanistan. And then he came to Texas where he, in fact, died. The Texas Attorney General should investigate this man’s death. Justice demands it.
