Taurine could be more effective than finasteride at preventing hair loss.
That's what one study by Kim et al. (2013) found, at least in a model using the curious C. elegans roundworm.
They simulated stress in the C. elegans through exposure to tunicamycin, which inhibits protein metabolism in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). After exposure, the controls showed increased Hsp-70, a sign of ER stress. Additionally, worm mobility decreased.
However, among those treated with taurine, Hsp-70 showed significantly lower expression, meanwhile those treated with astressin-b and finasteride did not show such decreased expression. For worm mobility, all three produced significant improvements against the controls.
If we are to believe as corroborated by other sources that finasteride does not actually prevent hair loss alone but rather acts like a generic antistress agent similar to progesterone, then we are able to extrapolate these findings with C. elegans to not only hair but cellular stress in general. That is, hair loss is simply a symptom of stress in hair cells, and removing that stress restores growth.

More on T3, one of Ray Peat's favorite pro-metabolic interventions.
-> Strongly agonizes thyroid hormone receptors (TR) in comparison to the more common T4 which is weaker
-> TR agonism directly affects mitochondrial output, leading to increased metabolism
-> Lasts about half a day to a day due to its short half life
-> Deficiency is often the culprit in hypothyroidism because of poor T4->T3 conversion in the liver
-> Direct supplementation without T4 can result in an imbalance, resulting in increased T3->rT3 deactivation
I like using Tyronene (Idealabs T3) before workouts and TyroMix (T3+T4) otherwise.
