This wastewater disaster is a perfect example of the adage that there are no solutions, only tradeoffs. Those who consider themselves to be environmentalists really need to think about how over-regulation can backfire, sometimes catastrophically. And this same dynamic impacts the broader economy in largely unseen ways, particularly in areas like infrastructure, energy, and housing where we simply fall behind due to the paralysis currently built into our approval systems. Regulation is not inherently a fix-all solution—it often makes problems much harder to solve.
Jerusalem@JerusalemDemsas

One of the largest spills of untreated wastewater in American history happened while an environmental review process held up sewer line repairs because they were studying risks to a flower and a bat.

New Penn-Wharton study shows per-capita federal spending on each age group: Seniors: $43,700 Children and young adults: $4,300. Clearly, the answer is to eliminate the FICA cap, use all "tax-the-rich" revenues on more SocSec & Medicare costs, and push that ratio to 15:1. 🙄

Democrats keep schizophrenically ping-ponging between two different forms of identity politics when what they actually need to do is take a deep breath and just act more normal about promoting people who are good at their jobs. slowboring.com/p/the-quest-fo…

Extremely underrated Hasan Piker moment was when he went on a five minute rant about how the streets should run red with the blood of landlords and like five days later everyone found out his mom owns and manages commercial real estate

I understand it was a tough night with competition, but if that's your season debut, might be time to pull the plug 😬

I have dealt with the Top 3 largest food distributors in America; Sysco, US Foods, and Performance Foods. I was most definitely not a “Mom & Pop.” I owned a mid-sized food manufacturing/distribution company that I sold in 2024. And Mark isn’t wrong. This is what US Foods and Sysco have done for years. They buy up Mom & Pop to create a monopoly on goods. Capitalism at its core. That’s why a burger from 7 different chains tastes the same—all procured from the same distributor. MAGA is just too fucking dumb to realize what’s happening.

This isn’t a small deal. Restaurant Depot is where most mom & pop restaurants go to buy inventory because Sysco is so expensive. Restaurant Depot was privately owned. Sysco is owned by… you guessed it, BlackRock & Vanguard. Now private equity can control pricing for food costs with zero competition. Just like they did with housing. This should be an anti-trust violation, but we have politicians that work for Big Corp, not us.

Notable deal in distribution this morning. Sysco is buying Restaurant Depot for $29 billion. Plans to expand RD more aggressively. It gives Sysco a huge entry into cash-and-carry and a large number of independent restaurant customers. restaurantbusinessonline.com/financing/sysc…

“It was very sad. You had homes that looked like they were bombed out” — @hasanthehun described to @Elex_Michaelson his experience seeing Havana, Cuba. “I was very sad by all the poverty that I saw. And then I was very angry," he said. He explains why.

Let's be clear: Spain: enacts rent control -> no more homes Argentina: ends rent control -> tons of new homes Rent control is a better way to destroy cities than dropping bombs on them.
Cato Institute@CatoInstitute

Spain froze rents and capped increases at 2%, but rent control is already cutting supply by up to 50% and not improving conditions for renters. Spain should follow Argentina, which ended rent control in 2023 and has seen housing supply rise 180%, reports Cato’s @hiperfalcon. ow.ly/k7Mx50YztmZ

If a right wing influencer said “America deserved 9/11” and didn’t endorse trump in 2020 or in 2024, there would be no discussion about republicans embracing them; it would be a non starter. But for some reason Democrats are expected, even scolded for not wanting to do so.
