Given that the colloidal process wasn't invented until the latter 1850s, and that Louis Daguerre invented the daguerreotype in 1839, I assume this is a daguerreotype. Given the subject of the photograph, I wonder if this wasn't taken by Daguerre himself.

Did you know the Duke of Wellington lived long enough to be photographed? This image, taken in 1844, captures Arthur Wellesley, the hero of Waterloo, in one of the earliest photographs ever taken.
