BREAKING -- Judge just released opinion that San Mateo County had cause to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus based on three issues: 1- conflict of interest with Victor Aenlle, her chief of staff, the judge finding "Sheriff Corpus and Mr. Aenlle were in a close personal relationship outside the boundaries of a professional working relationship," 2- the overtime investigation into union president Carlos Tapia, 3- and the tranfer of Captain Brian Philip from the Professional Standards Bureau to Corrections after he refused to deliver notice of an IA investigation to a sergeant. The county says the the Board of Supervisors is deciding the date of a special public session to finally decide if Sheriff Corpus will go. For her part, Corpus' attorneys are appealing to State Attorney General Rob Bonta "to intervene immediately to stop an unlawful and dangerous abuse of power in San Mateo County."

SAN MATEO COUNTY CONFIRMS I-TEAM REPORT ON MISSING TRANSCRIPT PAGES, REVEALS JUDGE'S PAYCHECK FOR ANTI-SHERIFF REPORT San Mateo County CONFIRMS my report that 29 pages of the interview transcript for the sheriff's chief of staff were withheld from the final audit report performed by retired Judge LaDoris Cordell, but says, "There was nothing nefarious" and that the missing pages were "not cited by Cordell nor were they material to the report." But, as I repeated last night, the missing pages included Victor Aenlle's most direct statement denying misconduct while working as chief of staff. Also in his release, San Mateo County Executive Mike Callagy finally reveals that they paid Judge Cordell $200,000 for the investigation and final report. He says Cordell's going rate is $750/hour. Callagy and the county call Sheriff Christina Corpus' $10 million claim (the first step to a lawsuit) "completely baseless and a distraction from the issues." Callagy, County Counsel John Nibbelin, Supervisors Ray Mueller and Noelia Corzo, and Judge Cordell did not respond to my request for comment in last night's report. Instead, a day later, Callagy released the statement through the county website and I've copied it below.

DEVELOPMENTS IN SAN MATEO COUNTY SHERIFF CHRISTINA CORPUS CONTROVERSY Lawyers for the sheriff have sent a 6-page letter to the Board of Supervisors requesting that they petition the Superior Court to remove the charter amendment from the March 4th ballot. The supervisors are asking voters to change the county charter to give them the power to fire Corpus. Her attorneys call the move a “hasty and uninformed act of political overreach.” Secondly, at a recent board meeting, County Attorney John Nibbelin warned the supervisors to avoid campaigning for the charter amendment. But check out Supervisor Noelia Corzo’s Instagram promoting an event for the “anti-corruption” charter amendment and raising money for it. I asked Nibbelin to weigh in and have not heard back. Keep you posted.
