really enjoying the based16z longposts arc imo consequences of the ubiquitous social media status game charade is people's lack of presence - including both the people irl who are always attempting to get the best content *and* the people online who are stuck consuming said content instead of living their own lives to the best of their ability. it's why some club culture feels emptier than it should, bc too many people are there but not really focused on living in the moment. also why the zoomer gen is so doomer all the time, bc they spend too much of their time online comparing themselves to highlight reels of their peers. have been pondering why the bezos viral post got such a visceral reaction on socials tho. dont think it is too deep at a personal level honestly, just think his girl enjoys the iPhone x IG x club culture zeitgeist and he's along for the ride bc she makes him happy. the flurry of responses is likely bc bezos is the absolute peak of achievement for personal wealth but he is enjoying himself the same way the common man does at the club. reason this is subtly unsettling for people is the realization that the path to that amount of wealth seems so unattainable, so with that should come experiences that are also unattainable to them. and if you're assuming that there's a direct correlation between wealth and happiness, then this sort of breaks that mental model. eat the rich has become such a popular cohort among young people because they see the unequal wealth distribution and then determine that it is wealthy people's fault they feel unfulfilled and unhappy in their lives. e.g. zohran winning in nyc. but if ultra wealthy people are enjoying themselves the same way the common man would, then it forces people to consider that it might not be the bourgeousie's fault that they are not content in their own lives, even if they're realizing this subconsciously
