Been at ESPN a long time - this one was an all timer. Before social media, it was as viral as a story can be. I watched it on a tape in the news room. I couldn’t stop watching his teammates.

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

"We're not with the activists we're just reporting on them." This is from Don Lemon's reporting at the St. Paul church. Arresting journalists for simply highlighting what's happening in this country is a gross violation of our First Amendment rights. He must be released immediately.

@jemelehill Real question. What is the difference between independent journalist and a person with a camera and a live stream. I mean this from a legal perspective. Could not everyone then claim to be a journalist as long as they release content?

Today's AP Poll is out. A note on my ballot: I did not rank Alabama this week. I will not rank a team that has to circumvent the rules through a court order just to win (and still lost). To me, that's a team admitting its own weakness.

@CFBNerds When you make rules that are so contradictory that they can’t possible be enforced this will happen. Courts will not determine that an NBA contract is somehow different from another pro contract, and the ncaa has already established that g league and Euro pro contracts are fine

@CFBNerds @RyanCFowler Question… the ncaa seems to draw a distinction between g league professional contracts, overseas pro league contracts, and nba contracts. Would a court of law draw a distinction?

This advice from the UConn AD is laughably ignorant of basic principles of law and is flatly illegal. The Tuscaloosa state court ruling making Bediako eligible includes a provision prohibiting the NCAA from "threatening, imposing, attempting to impose, suggesting, or implying any penalties on Mr. Bediako or the University of Alabama." The NCAA is effectively a trade union - it is not a government entity and has no statutory legal basis to exist. That means the NCAA is beholden by any law or legal ruling even at the state court level. So if Tuscaloosa state court says "you can't punish Bama for this," and the NCAA ignores it and doesn't count games Bediako plays in for NCAA tournament eligibility, the NCAA is almost certainly in contempt of court and open to significant penalties and future liability. Don't confuse the NCAA's inability to regulate NIL with a state court's ability to regulate the NCAA. *I am a practicing attorney, these thoughts are my own and not legal advice.
Pete Thamel@PeteThamel

UConn AD David Benedict tells ESPN that he’s imploring the NCAA and president Charlie Baker to take a stand in eligibility cases where there’s NCAA rules being circumvented by a judge’s ruling. “If legally we can’t control or impose NCAA rules in terms of who can play and who can’t, based on a legal decision, the NCAA still has the right to determine what games count toward the NCAA tournament. And what games don’t count. “The NCAA has deemed (Charles Bediako) ineligible. Fine, he can play (on a judge’s ruling). It doesn’t mean the games need to count toward the NCAA tournament. Otherwise, throw away the rule book and set it on fire. There are no rules.”

There’s no way to slice it: this is an awful look for Kaleb DeBoer at @AlabamaFTBL. Losses happen. Thorough ass-kickings, in the CFB Playoffs, for an @SEC team is not suppose to go down this way. We’ll probably hear Alabama folks saying DeBoer should’ve taken himself to @UMichFootball. I mean, this is that damn bad.

Couldnt agree with Nicole more! They’ve always been screwed up, but this time they jobbed the sport’s BIGGEST ALL TIME brand. Why? Pretty simple. The Irish alone can’t compete with the Almighty BRAND that reps the @SEC!
Nicole Auerbach@NicoleAuerbach

The College Football Playoff selection committee really screwed up this time. The process has to work for the CFP to earn and keep our trust. This one didn’t. This one made a mockery of the whole sport. COLUMN: nbcsports.com/college-footba…
