“As long as they’re passing.” From a candid conversation with my seniors yesterday about what their expectations of their own children will be if/when they have kids. If parents indeed have power, then this will be (already is) a force to reckon with. And we’re to blame. As we’ve made grades matter, generations of students have come to know grades don’t (really) matter (that most of school doesn’t really matter). And so, why would they expect much more from their kids? And that is why we need to change education by making learning matter, not grading. So, then our future parents’ standard is, “As long as they’re learning.” Changing the narrative from what they expect FROM their kids (grading) to what they expect FOR their kids (learning). It’s not too late to twist the plot. The saga is not over. “As long as they’re learning.” We can do better. #Project180
