Data is alarming: 1 litre rice-based ethanol = ~10,790 litres of water Rice needed for 1 litre ethanol = 2.5–3 kg FCI rice diverted for ethanol in 2024–25 = 52 lakh tonnes This can produce nearly 245 crore litres of ethanol. Now the next shocker: Centre is reportedly planning to cut broken rice in PDS from 25% to 10% to free up rice for ethanol feedstock. So rice meant for the poor is being reduced, while rice for fuel is being increased. 🚨Facts first, alarmism later. 🇮🇳India has record rice surpluses - FCI stocks hit 59+ million tonnes, far above buffer norms. The 52 lakh tonnes allocated for ethanol is surplus rice (not PDS priority stock) to avoid waste, support MSP for farmers, and reduce rotting in godowns. ⚡️This produced 245 crore litres of ethanol as part of the E20 blending programme, which India achieved ahead of schedule. Results: saved $19 billion in forex, cut oil imports by millions of barrels, reduced CO2, and paid farmers thousands of crores. 💧Water footprint (10,790 L/L ethanol) is real and high for rice, that's why policy is shifting heavily to maize (now 45-48% share, lower water use, often rainfed) and pushing 2G ethanol from residues. Rice is ~22%. Not ideal long-term, but using existing surplus beats importing oil. 🌾PDS broken rice cut (25% → 10%)? It frees 90 lakh tonnes of broken rice for ethanol/animal feed without reducing total grain to 80 crore beneficiaries. Whole rice stays for food; surplus/broken goes to value addition. Food Secretary's plan manages excess, not starvation. Green fuel isn't perfect, but neither is $100+/barrel oil dependence. Prioritising energy security + farmer income on surplus stocks isn't "draining groundwater and shrinking the poor man's plate" - it's pragmatic surplus management after decades of procurement. Congress ruled during many of those surplus-building years too. Better critique: accelerate maize/2G shift and water-efficient farming. Selective outrage on a working programme helps no one. Data > politics.
