@JohnBaldLangLit Coursework placed ridiculous pressure on teachers, especially where lots of pupils sat around the C/D border. A HoD I took over from wrote whole essays on the board as cloze passages, I was pressured to cheat & got in bother when I wouldn't, friends wrote it for their children...

theguardian.com/education/2025… I'm not sure that Ofqual is to be proud of - the exam boards are certainly not - but Sir Ian Bauckham is right to warn about the dangers of AI and coursework. Coursework was corrupt in the 00s - I know one teacher who wrote their child's coursework, because if the HoD - from an Eton group school - did it, the result would be a C, and they wanted, and got, an A. Another, in a failing comp, submitted identical coursework for a whole group of BTech candidates in "forensic science" - or that's what the course was called, not that it was a course at all - and no one noticed, even though I told the board, anonymously to protect the source, who worked at the school. A third, grammar school, HT, would not accept any grade below a pupil's target. A fourth, MFL, was forced to resign after refusing to cheat. The DH took over the group and did the "work". Restoring coursework will just mean more extra work for teachers - doing it, not marking it.

@stellacreasy You’re a backbench MP. No one needs your statement on Donald Trump.

My statement tonight on President Trump: The threat to destroy an entire civilisation is beyond unconscionable and unacceptable - it’s not just about the niceties of diplomatic language but the intimidation of an entire nation whose people are already under attack by the ayatollahs Trump claims to oppose. We cannot stand by as he rips up international law and risks global chaos as even if he doesn’t follow through this time we are all paying the price for this war - it’s time to ask congress about the 25th amendment and what their redlines are for triggering it.

@AndyNelson1977 @TTRadioOfficial Presence comes from the confidence that you have systems and support behind you to deal with students who go out of their way to destroy your lessons.

@sorelaboursbath @TTRadioOfficial Surely presence and magnetism are skills a teacher in the modern era needs. So just as in any other job, you address the training need.

@AndyNelson1977 @TTRadioOfficial You sound very lucky in your schools but I believe that your softly softly approach will be of limited use for many teachers in many settings. I note you appear not to have thought an apology is in order for the students delivering the assembly. As usual, they are forgetten

@sorelaboursbath @TTRadioOfficial It's not an instant thing. You model - over a period of time - a respectful (not fearful), supportive environment. Maybe have a quick, quiet chat with the "talkers" afterwards & task them with presenting at assembly next week. Make it into a learning experience.

@AndyNelson1977 @TTRadioOfficial After we’ve done the kids being kids recognition on the way into the assembly, a good chunk of the year group talk over and make fun of the Year 10 students delivering the assembly, causing visible embarrassment. How do you deal with that?

@sorelaboursbath @TTRadioOfficial Presence & magnetism. Not shouting, not anger, recognition kids are kids. Strong projection "morning all. Get yourselves in position. Loads of things to cover today". Simple.

@AndyNelson1977 @TTRadioOfficial Low and mid isn’t low and mid if it is unrelenting. And in any case we are not always talking about low level disruption. We are talking about abuse of teachers and peers. Look at rhetoric AI fakes of teachers in Scotland. Is a cosy little chat with the child going to fix that?

@sorelaboursbath @TTRadioOfficial Steady on. You're sounding a bit headmasterly there with that tone. Did you mean "have you thought about the impact of low to mid level disruption on learning?". Same question, less condescending tone.

@sorelaboursbath @TTRadioOfficial That's not what I'm saying. But you'll understand the cynicism when seeing phrases deployed by the man who's done huge harm to relationships in education. Talk me through what you mean by the calm, dignified space thing if it's not Bennett/Birbalsingh style. I'm genuinely curious

@sorelaboursbath @TTRadioOfficial It's people skills. Pull not push. If you're having to rely on fear, compliance, deference - whether adults or kids - you've failed. It's only in education we see this outdated control based mindset.

@sorelaboursbath @TTRadioOfficial It absolutely stands up to scrutiny in every single professional & military field, so there's no reason it won't stand up in education. Have you read the book? It's a fantastic resource to create the structures, mindset & processes to engage mire effectively. Highly recommended
