I have been building companies for thirty years and the one constant is that export controls on dual-use technology backfire. They work for about eighteen months — just long enough to give foreign labs the incentive and the funding to catch up. Happened with encryption in the nineties, happened with chips, and it is happening right now with frontier models. The U.S. still leads, but the lead is measured in quarters, not decades, and every restriction accelerates the clock. The real lesson for founders: the AI stack is fragmenting by jurisdiction the way cloud did by region. If you are building anything serious, you need to architect for a world where the model you rely on today might be export-controlled, deprecated, or priced out tomorrow. Multi-model, multi-provider, multi-geography is no longer a nice-to-have. It is table stakes.

Every one of these tech bros brags about replacing you with AI, lays off tens of thousands, then backfills with mass-imported H-1B workers. What reaction do they expect? Enthusiasm? If they treated AI as a growth engine instead of a cost-cutting tool, public perception would look very different. And I say it as an AI enthusiasm and daily user.

Talking to smarter folks than me, I'm convinced many of the AI folks in my timeline are full of shit. Nobody is "running 20 agents over night" and building stuff for actual users. Maybe some are building internal tools or disposable software. Maybe. But building software people like using? That doesn't get hacked on day one or blow up after the 3rd user? Nope. I don't even understand what that's supposed to look like. Do you work out a 57 pages document that perfectly describes what you want to build and then summon 14 agents and have them run wild for 6 hours? And what comes out on the other end isn't a broken pile of shit? Nope. Not buying it. PS: it may also be that I have an IQ of 82 and can't figure it out.

What do you expect? The city has gained a few million people in recent years. Infrastructure did not grow that much. The city is extremely expensive so people move to the suburbs and now they have to commute every day. At the same time Madrid has barely any biking infrastructure that could help reduce the traffic. All this is predictable.
