Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, MVC (Retd) the indomitable Lion of Ladakh passed away on April 10, 2026, in Leh following a heart attack. He was 61. His life was a masterclass in bravery, resilience, and battlefield leadership. Here is the legacy of the man who turned the tide of the Kargil War: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗮- ▶️In May 1999, during the early days of Operation Vijay, then-Major Sonam Wangchuk led a column of the Ladakh Scouts to the glaciated heights of the Batalik Sector (5,500m/18,000ft). ▶️While moving to pre-empt enemy occupation, his column was ambushed by Pakistani forces. Under heavy fire, with one of his men fallen, Wangchuk didn't retreat. ▶️He led a daring counter-ambush from a flank, killing enemy soldiers and recovering heavy machine guns and vital intelligence. ▶️His unit evicted 136 enemy troops in a grueling three-day battle, securing the Chorbat La axis. This was India’s first major tactical victory of the war, shattering the enemy’s morale. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 ▶️Maha Vir Chakra (MVC): For his l conspicuous gallantry of the highest order,he was awarded India’s second-highest military decoration. ▶️Two army posts Sonam 1 and Sonam 2 stand named after him, a rare honor for a living soldier. 𝗔 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the Indian Army's Fire and Fury Corps have paid rich tributes, hailing him as a resolute leader whose spirit was as steadfast as the mountains he defended. He didn't just fight for the land; he fought for the honor of every Ladakhi and every Indian. Rest in Power, Colonel Saab.
