A 2023 study published in the journal Science analyzed the genomes of over 3,000 modern humans and used a new statistical method (called FitCoal) to model ancient population sizes. It concluded that our early human ancestors (pre-Homo sapiens) experienced a severe population bottleneck around 930,000 to 813,000 years ago (roughly 800,000–900,000 years ago). The effective number of breeding individuals dropped to about 1,280 and this tiny population persisted for roughly 117,000 years. It represents a loss of about 98.7% of the ancestral population at the time. This event likely explains a noticeable gap in the African and Eurasian fossil record during that period. The researchers suggest it may have been triggered by extreme climate changes (glaciation, droughts, etc.) and could even be linked to evolutionary shifts, such as the emergence of a new hominin species that later gave rise to Homo sapiens, Neanderthals, and Denisovans.
