My last PHD dissertation defense at Harvard, and it was a great one! My Azerbaijani student Sama Mammadova gave us a history of consumer banking from the Renaissance to the 18th c. Next time you go to your local bank, remember that we owe the practice of lending to the poor and less well off to the Franciscans. It was first advocated by the Observant Franciscans of 15th c. Italy, who talked Pope Leo X (a Medici!) in 1515 into authorizing the practice of allowing interest to be charged on loans -- under the guidance of canon law of course (which established a principle for deciding on a just interest rate). So forget the old 'Weber thesis'-- this was 2 years before the outbreak of the Protestant Reformation! @ufhamilton @LawLiberty @PostlibOrder

@JamesWHankins1 Was St Thomas of Aquinas who prohibited the interest in lending money even to por people? Argentas no parit argentas.

A Canadian musician named Dave Carroll was on a flight from Halifax to Omaha, USA in 2008 when a passenger behind him looked out the window during a stopover and said, “Oh my God, they’re throwing guitars out there.”
Carroll arrived at his destination to find his $3,500 Taylor acoustic, an instrument he’d saved for months to buy, smashed with a hole through the body.
He spent the next 9 months trying to get United Airlines to pay for it. They told him he’d missed the 24-hour claim window.
So he wrote a country song called “United Breaks Guitars,” shot a music video on a $150 budget, and put it on YouTube. It hit 150,000 views in a day, 5 million in a month, and now sits at around 30 million. Within four weeks of the upload, the Times of London was reporting that United’s stock had dropped 10%, costing shareholders around $180 million.
The airline phoned to apologise.
The CEO of Taylor Guitars phoned to give him two free guitars.
United later asked if they could use the video to train their own customer service staff. Then, one trip later, they lost his luggage.

@RichRaho I recall hearing that Pope Francis had a similar problem trying to cancel his newspaper subscription after his election!
English

About two months after Robert Francis Prevost became Pope Leo XIV, he put in a call to his bank back home, a close friend, the Rev. Tom McCarthy, told a gathering of Catholics last week. The new pope identified himself as Robert Prevost, saying that he wished to change the phone number and address that the bank had on file. The pope answered the security questions correctly. Then, the woman on the line for the bank told him that it wasn’t enough — he would have to come to the branch in person. “He said, ‘Well, I’m not going to be able to do that,’” Father McCarthy said in a video clip shared on social media. The pope tried a different tack. “Would it matter to you if I told you I’m Pope Leo?” he asked, according to Father McCarthy. She hung up.
English

@drudolph_ii @RichRaho No, he could cancel the suscripción due to a telephone call of the gentleman who delivers the newspaper in Buenos Aires. The problem was with the the receptionist in the Jesuit Headquarters. He could not believe that the one falling was the Pope, so he hang up.

A Ukrainian doctor developed a simple device to help her asthmatic cat 🐱 breathe more comfortably by administering salbutamol inhalation. She modified a water container to create a closed inhalation chamber for her cat 😿 When the cat has difficulty breathing , it goes inside this setup, and once the device is activated, the salbutamol-containing aerosol spreads within it. This allows the cat to inhale the medication, helping to widen the airways and breathe more easily 🥹❤️

🌟 Big personal news: I’m joining @GoogleDeepMind full-time in London starting this week.
I’ll be working on the implications of AGI for human life, science, and society; on what it means to live, connect, and discover in a world where cognitive agency is no longer uniquely ours.
The way we answer these questions will define what it means to be human. I can’t think of a better place to do it.
