Today Penguin Press announced my new book, Off Ramp: How to Be a Peacemaker in an Age of Contempt. I’ve been working on this project for a few years. It’s about something I think a lot of us feel. We’re losing the ability to disagree without seeing each other as enemies. There has to be a better way, and this book is my attempt to find it. It isn’t easy. And I don’t always get it right. But I think it’s worth trying. I know my mom will read it (and I hope you will too). More here: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/827061/o…

Utah has been named the No. 1 state in the nation for economic outlook for the 19th consecutive year. Unlike rankings that look backward, this one measures the policies most likely to support opportunity in the years ahead. Utah has remained at the top since the index began. US fertility reached 1.57 last year, the lowest ever recorded, and the WSJ explanation is "uncertainty about finances, relationship stability, and the political climate" my great grandma had eleven children during the second world war, in a country being bombed, in a house with no running water, on rations. poor people have always had kids. the poorest people on earth right now still have kids and the financial excuse is a story we tell ourselves because it makes us feel good and the real one is unbearable the real mechanism is that we got rich enough to redefine children as an expense instead of the point. somewhere in the last fifty years the cultural goal inverted and a child stopped being what life is for and became a line item competing with the lifestyle. once you frame it that way the math never works, because the math isnt supposed to work. that's the point we are living in the richest moment in human history and we decided to use the surplus to buy ourselves out of the future. the most prosperous civilization that has ever existed is committing demographic suicide at the altar of personal optimization and comfort, and the official line is that we cant afford it the birthrate is a lagging indicator of a civilization that forgot why it was alive

“As followers of Christ, we should seek to live peaceably and lovingly with other children of God who do not share our values and do not have the covenant obligations we have assumed. “In a democratic government we should seek ‘fairness for all.’ In countless circumstances, strangers’ suspicion or even hostility gradually give way to friendship when personal contacts produce mutual respect.” — President Dallin H. Oaks (@OaksDallinH) #GeneralConference

Hope is the most powerful force in the world…and we desperately need more of it today. Hope gives us resiliency and forces us to be better. Hope brings light into the darkness. Hope replaces pain and anger and loss with peace and joy. Because He is risen, there is hope. nytimes.com/2023/04/08/opi…

He is risen! And because Christ rose again, we will too. Thanks to Him, no pain, fear, failure, or unfairness is permanent. This is greater love. This is Easter.

I’m not asking you, I’m telling you. Take a moment and listen to this 81 second response from Victor Glover after being asked if he had any thoughts leading up to Easter. I don’t quite think it can be overstated how perfect this crew is for the job.

$1 BILLION for the Great Salt Lake. President Trump has officially requested a historic $1B to restore and protect one of America’s most important environmental assets. The Great Salt Lake fuels our economy and protects the health of millions. With real federal partnership, we can accelerate water flows, restore ecosystems, tackle invasive species, and address toxic dust. Now Congress must act. We’re going to fill the lake. 🇺🇸

This is a big win for Utah and the West. With nearly 90% of Forest Service lands west of the Mississippi, moving the U.S. Forest Service headquarters to Salt Lake City will put leadership closer to the lands, communities, and challenges they manage. It also means hundreds of jobs coming to Utah and better, faster decisions on the ground for the people who rely on our public lands, from ranchers and timber producers to families who work and recreate there. We appreciate President Trump, Secretary Brooke L. Rollins, and Deputy Secretary Stephen A. Vaden for taking this step, and we look forward to welcoming Chief Tom Schultz and the @forestservice team to Utah. More here: usda.gov/about-usda/new…

Ben Sasse wants the nation to reflect on the things that he’s asked his own son to understand: “self-restraint and self-discipline and self-control.” That’s a father’s bequest to his son, and a public servant’s to his country, writes @tunkuv on.wsj.com/4b82HKN

Last year, The Atlantic gave me $10K to gamble with. What started as a journalistic gimmick turned into something more... unnerving. My cover story on the online betting boom warping sports, culture, politics, and the psyches of millions of young men: theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/…
