@RealDealPodz “The NBA’s preferred version”? You understand Team Donaghy’s self-serving filings simply repeated existing conspiracy theories, right? And that the feds looked into them before mocking his cooperation? What specifically are you alleging Foster and the 2003-07 betting scandal?

If anyone is wondering why I left the American Society of Criminology @ASCRM41 (ASC) then look no further than this month’s “The Criminologist” magazine. It features two articles… 1/

Worth pointing for the bang-my-head-against-the-wallth time, that changes in the murder rate — drastic changes in either direction — have zero correlation with changes in poverty, systemic racism, lead gasoline or any other of the so called "root cause" of crime in Chicago.
Peter Moskos@PeterMoskos

Thinking about Chicago's murder rate. Steady this year compared to 2025, but way down from 2021 and about the same as 2004, 2010, and 2011. The number in 2025 was the lowest in decades, but Chicago has been losing population, generally. Especially black people. (1/11)

I look forward to a day when (1) crime - not murder - rates are compared to 2019 (pre-George Floyd) and especially to 2013/14 (at our recent low) and (2) the 2020 spike isn't assumed to be attibuted to Covid. Just maddening how persistent this framing is npr.org/2026/06/30/nx-…

Update: The combined total of alleged bets in the 2022-24 (Terry Rozier, Damon Jones, and Jontay Porter) and the 2023-24 (Malik Beasley and Ed Davis) NBA betting scandals is approx. $682,760
Sean Patrick Griffin@spgauthor

If looking strictly at the approximate volumes of known/alleged betting in NBA scandals: December 2022 - March 2024 (“Operation Nothing But Bet” - Porter, Rozier, Jones, and perhaps Billups): $608,594 October 2003 - April 2007 (“Operation Flagrant Foul” - Donaghy): $80,950,000

Goodhart’s law is the idea that when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure. In science, and in academia more broadly, one often comes across what might be called Goodhart academics: ferociously ambitious, very smart people who have become extremely good at maximising the metrics used to evaluate academic success — publications, citations, grants, and so on — without ever producing any valuable work.

I will say the 1990s crime drop did make me cynical about sociology. I mean, what a thrilling time to be studying crime! The greatest crime drop ever! And it was largely ignored. I thought the field would self correct. Social "science" and all. Nope. New data changed few minds.

I repeat my call for someone to systematically track and research this recurring issue of "community justice"/"violence interruptor" crimes. In my experience these programs are ill-conceived and poorly managed with no accountability and no evidence supporting results.

@ashleytrubin @Theory_Society I think non-academics would be surprised to see how open faculty in the social sciences and humanities are about things like censoring and discriminating, and especially about valuing "social justice" over academic freedom and pursuit of truth.

I'm glad Kat wrote this, to document what happened. I was certainly cancel adjacent and had a very tough time getting Back from the Brink published. But I went through nothing like this. (I guess because policing was already considered beyond the pale.) katrosenfield.substack.com/p/on-being-can…
Kat Rosenfield@katrosenfield

Anyway, here's the whole sordid and very stupid story, which should hopefully be at least somewhat more fun to read about than it was to live through katrosenfield.substack.com/p/on-being-can…

When I was, uh, "between publishers" in 2023, I was told by the acquisitions editor of a major trade house that in the that current woke #BLM culture, they simply would not touch a book about policing. It was not personal, she said, but the whole field had been cancelled.

@viahalfspace @SebC__ The “Untold” episode on the 03-07 NBA betting scandal is a fact-challenged *purposeful* manipulation of documented history based on discredited pathological liar Tim Donaghy’s long ago debunked false narrative. If interested this thread helps explain: x.com/spgauthor/stat…
Sean Patrick Griffin@spgauthor

As I’ve entertained media inquiries about the @netflix “Untold” episode on the @nba betting scandal involving fmr referee Tim Donaghy, one topic which keeps being raised is the 12/06 mtg b/w Donaghy and his co-conspirators, his bf Tommy Martino and TM's pal Jimmy Battista. 1/X

Imagine breaking your back to become a NBA referee for 30 seasons pushing to your 60s and this is your epitaph 😂😂😂 Refereeing is tough, players who can't hit a free throw don't get that much hate I only remember the day he pulled his ankle during a Knicks game
