Imagine telling painters they can’t sell their art to anyone, only rent it to galleries for a micro % of their ticket sales. This is the life of musicians and Music NFTs are here to fix that.

Polkadot.. wow The new website looks like it was made with Ai in 10 mins and the ecosystem page has more wallets listed than projects. Think they may be trying to signal something. The end is nigh. A real shame, as the ecosystem had so much promise polkadot.com

To anyone who saw the Coop Recs round today and thought "haven't you already tried this before" the answer is yes. My journey with Coop Recs goes back as early as 2020 when I joined @audius to help with their AUDIO airdrop. This is when I moved to LA right when NFTs started to pop off. I spent most of my time in 2021 as an avid collector and angel investor supporting artists and companies taking shots on goal and giving this world a chance. I was determined to help my friends navigate crypto in a healthy way - whether that was through dropping NFTs or just learning how to buy BTC. This is where the original "Music NFT" meme started - specifically when I saw independent artists getting more funding through drops than they had made in their entire life through Spotify. This era gave me hope that there was a new way artists could crowdsource funds from fans and a tangible way for those fans to be seen and have upside along the way. This thesis is what inspired me to raise a $10m fund in 2022 - the first iteration of "Coop Records" as it's known today. I managed the fund as a Solo GP and invested in dozens of onchain music startups along with more traditional music projects and a handful of artist investments. I still manage that fund today and am a proud backer of projects like @zora @iyk_app and @privy_io along with a number of liquid tokens positions But in 2023 it was increasingly clear to me that the amount of new talent entering the space was staggering. The narrative of NFTs were cooked and anyone who was once willing to give it a shot wasn't once the money dried up. I take a ton of responsibility for advocating for the sector too prematurely and propping up a narrative that simply wasn't ready for prime time. This is when I spun out a new vehicle and label arm which is the Coop Recs platform that we run today. Early investors like @nascent backed our pre-seed with nothing more than a hope and a dream. To bring great music onchain and find ways to make this world matter again in the eyes of artists and fans. We were simply putting songs out on all the existing tools at the time, from Sound to Audius to DRiP and so many more. We were getting great talent onchain by addressing the shortcomings of crypto head on and making it as easy as sending a song and a cover art and taking care of the rest for them. We built great relationships with teams like @layer3 and @boost_xyz to drive mints in a market climate where appetite was thin and managed to build a small collectible business around incentivized mints and open editions. But it quickly dawned on me that for this to work - we needed a home for all this music and a place for fans to feel excited about where it all lived. This is when we raised out seed round from @1kxnetwork to build our platform and own the full stack from the ground up. We built our own collectibles protocol and started dabbling with songcoins. Every time we would learn something new and figure out how to make this feel more exciting to crypto traders, but also one step closer to an app that real music fans could understand. And that brings us to today - where Coop Rec 2.0 takes all those learnings and packages it into a product that feels ready to bring to the masses. But with all the learnings of our collectibles (now pre-sales) fused with the power of songcoins. So yeah - we've tried it a bunch. Got a lot wrong. And will get it wrong a lot more times to come. But in case it isn't abundantly clear at this point - this is a sector I care deeply about and will stop at nothing to bring it life. Finding new ways for artists to fund their careers is extremely important and we've only scratched the surface on what coins can represent in the wider music industry. So feel free to keep doubting us - most people do and I don't expect that to change anytime soon. But if you take even 5-10 minutes to listen to the music you'll see a night and day difference in the artists who are now willing to give us a shot. It's not 1:1 with how artists engaged with crypto in 2021 - but it feels much healthier and more contained. And over time I'm convinced there will be some pretty amazing case studies that come out of it. So here's to a new day one for Coop Recs and to everyone who's supported us along the way. I believe in a bright future for onchain music and am grateful to wake up every morning and give it my best effort.
