Another moron who has no clue about Odyssey, or the Classics, or the Ancient Greek Civilisation in general. The moron says "Odysseus has absolutely zero regret over sacking Troy. He was PROUD of his accomplishments". Here is what Odysseus actually does when he hears a song about the sack of Troy. In Homer. In the original Greek, which the moron cannot read in the original text. Demodocus (8.521-531) has just sung about the fall of Troy; the wooden horse; the destruction Odysseus engineered. This is Odysseus's response: ταῦτ᾽ ἄρ᾽ ἀοιδὸς ἄειδε περικλυτός· αὐτὰρ Ὀδυσσεὺς τήκετο, δάκρυ δ᾽ ἔδευεν ὑπὸ βλεφάροισι παρειάς./"The famous bard sang these things; but Odysseus was melting, and tears wet his cheeks beneath his eyelids". Melting. τήκετο. The verb Homer uses for snow dissolving on mountains. And then the simile. Homer compares the sacker of Troy to: ὡς δὲ γυνὴ κλαίῃσι φίλον πόσιν ἀμφιπεσοῦσα, ὅς τε ἑῆς πρόσθεν πόλιος λαῶν τε πέσῃσιν/"As a woman weeps, falling about her dear husband, who has fallen before his city and his people..." She sees him dying. She throws herself on him and wails. Men behind her beat her back and shoulders with spears and drag her into slavery. Her cheeks waste with the most pitiful grief. ὣς Ὀδυσεὺς ἐλεεινὸν ὑπ᾽ ὀφρύσι δάκρυον εἶβεν/"So Odysseus shed a pitiful tear beneath his brows". Homer does not compare the victorious warrior to a triumphant conqueror. He compares him to the primary victim of city-sacking; a woman whose husband is killed and who is beaten into slavery. The word ἐλεεινόν, pitiable, describes the victor's tears. This is not "sorrow over fallen comrades". The song is about the destruction of Troy. The destruction Odysseus caused. Earlier in the same book (8.84-86), when Demodocus first sings about Troy: πορφύρεον μέγα φᾶρος ἑλὼν χερσὶ στιβαρῇσι κὰκ κεφαλῆς εἴρυσσε, κάλυψε δὲ καλὰ πρόσωπα· αἴδετο γὰρ Φαίηκας ὑπ᾽ ὀφρύσι δάκρυα λείβων Odysseus pulls his great purple cloak over his head and hides his face. Because he feels αἰδώς; shame. He does this repeatedly. Every time the bard sings, he covers his head and sobs. Every time the bard stops, he wipes his tears. A man who feels "absolutely zero regret" does not pull his cloak over his face to hide his weeping. Repeatedly. In the Underworld, Book 11, Odysseus sees Ajax still furious over the contest for Achilles's armour: ὡς δὴ μὴ ὄφελον νικᾶν τοιῷδ᾽ ἐπ᾽ ἀέθλῳ/"Would that I had never won in such a contest". An explicit expression of regret, in Odysseus's own words, for his winning caused Ajax's death. Is Odysseus also proud? Yes. At 9.19 he boasts: "I am Odysseus, son of Laertes, known to all men for my wiles, and my fame reaches heaven". At 9.502 he reveals his name to the Cyclops in triumph. Real pride. And Homer frames that pride as a catastrophic error that brings Poseidon's wrath on him for 10 years. This is the part that monodimensional readers of ancient Greek literature cannot process. In ancient Greek civilisation, nothing is linear and nothing is absolute. Not in the epics. Not in the tragedies. Not in the comedies. Not even in the philosophy. Every character is multifaceted. Achilles is the greatest warrior and a man who sits weeping in his tent. Hector is the defender of Troy and a man who admits he fights partly from shame, not courage. Antigone is righteous and inflexible to the point of self-destruction. Odysseus is proud AND he weeps like a captive widow. Homer holds both. In the same poem. In the same book. He opens Book 8 calling Odysseus πτολίπορθος, "sacker of cities" (8.3), and closes it comparing him to the primary victim of city-sacking. Anyone who reads the Odyssey and sees a man who felt "absolutely zero" about the destruction of Troy has not read the Odyssey. They have projected a fantasy of uncomplicated martial heroism onto a 2,700-year-old poem that is doing something they are not equipped, and capable, to recognise. Read the text. All of it. In Greek if you can manage it, or use Lattimore's translation, and stop listening to idiots like this moron.
