@sqlpass What happens to how the local User Groups are organized?
With no barrier to entry anyone can now start a User Group, or run their own SQL Saturday event.
Is there anyone who can offer a similar framework for User Groups to operate in?

@Michael_DSpain Good point. I can confirm that this is not the case in this environment.
English

@sqlsullivan If it’s a VM environment they might have licensed the host. Might be one reason they are saying that.

#sqlhelp Asking for a friend... They have SQL Enterprise Editions running Test/Dev/Uat workloads.
Will they incur licensing if they can prove they are for Tes/Dev/Uat only?
What is the official licensing position?
English

@mrdenny Thanks Denny.
Their current EA license vendor is telling them they don't need to worry about it. I feel they have been grossly misinformed.
English

@sqlsullivan They need to install the Dev edition to get a free license. If they have EE installed in UAT/QA/DEV they need to license it.
Dev = EE for feature purposes.

@sqlsullivan @SQLDBA If that's your use case, I stand by my recommendation of running away ;) It wasn't designed to run that way in perpetuity.
If you just need reporting and no HA, I'd go all 2017 or 2019 and use a cluster type of NONE.

Distributed Availability Group. SQL 2016 to SQL 2019 (reporting only). Direct seeding does not work, thanks to database version mismatch on SQL 2019.
How do I seed and sync databases using "backup and restore" on Secondary Availability Group?
English

@SQLDBA Thanks Kendal, I will give this a go. Does it mattet at what time I take the FULL backup, like before creating the DAG or after, or just as long as there's no LOG backup in between?
English

@sqlsullivan Restore DB on AG 2 replicas without recovering. Distributed Availability Group needs to already exist and set to manual seeding with both sides joined. On forwarder run “ALTER DATABASE [dbname] SET HADR AVAILABILITY GROUP = [AG 2 name]”. #sqlhelp
English

@SQLDBA @sqlsullivan We're all good. Just be careful, Adrian. I really wouldn't recommend what you're doing at all. If you need reporting and it's a permanent sol'n, I'd strongly recommend keeping same version of SQL Server.

@sqlsullivan No problem! We've escalated the post internally, so keep an eye out for a reply! ^JR

Is running SQL 2016+ Developer Edition allowed inside a commercially hosted VM?
I rent a VM from ABC Corp/Azure/Rackspace.
Is there any licensing liability if I install SQL Developer Edition?
Terms exclude "use the software for commercial software hosting services."

@MJSwart It's a crazy type of problem to solve, and way more fun than it should be.
