Portland city council is exploring a way to further punish downtown landlords by fining them for office vacancies. The “vacancy fee” idea was dreamed up by socialist council members Jamie Dunphy and Sameer Kanal as a way to force downtown landlords to lease their properties for pennies on the dollar. The fines would be implemented based on how long the spaces have been vacant, with larger fines for longer vacancies. Jim Mark, CEO of Melvin Mark Co. claims it would be a terrible idea that would further “dissuade further investment in downtown.” Mark says, “Building owners right now are trying to do anything they can to fill their space and there’s logic that we’re somehow trying to hold out for a higher rate,” he said. “But right now, I’ve got 20,000 square feet of space that I’m basically giving away.” While other downtowns in cities such as Austin, TX have fully recovered with heavy investment since 2020, Portland continues to struggle with one of the highest downtown vacancy rates in the country at 34%, with downtown traffic still 20% below 2019 rates. It is also ranked 80th out of 81 national municipalities in terms of investment attractiveness.

@elonmusk @LeahLibresco I have 5 kids under 3 (mix of adopted/foster). Sometimes we have 6. I like to say I’m a “stay in van dad” because I spend more time there than at home. I need an 8 passenger with enough range to drive them around town for the crazy amount of appointments and activities we have.

After finally watching #Transformers The Movie. I understand why kids were upset after seeing it. It's the freaking Red Wedding for 10 yr olds. After the first 30 minutes you didn't want to see your favorite character on screen for fear they would die next. Good lord.
